Owen Hargreaves is vying for a return to the Manchester United first team squad.

The Canadian-born, England international midfielder has been struck down by a recurrence of his knee problem.

A double operation in the USA forced him to miss almost all of the 2008/09 Premier League campaign, making just three appearances.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United's away match at West Ham on Saturday, Assistant Manager Mike Phelan said: " It's sort of a softly, softly approach with Owen. He's been out a long time now but he's actually back on the training ground.

" He has a lot of work to do, rehab work which is going to be a continuous thing for him now but he is actually doing ball-work out on the training ground."

United signed Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in May 2007 for a fee of around Au17 million.
