'So great to enjoy music crystal clear...'.

Byline: By GREG TINDLE South Wales Echo

Blind twins Stephen and Paul Vye-Parminter have found themselves really switched on thanks to their new radio sets. The brothers are among the first in Cardiff to listen to their favourite radio stations on new digital radios specially designed for the blind and partially-sighted.

The 34-year-olds, who are registered blind, have each received one of the sets free from the British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF).

'We're both music mad,' said hip hop and reggae fan Stephen, who works as a volunteer art teacher at the Cardiff Institute for the Blind in Newport Road.

'It's great to be able to tune in to a station and enjoy the music in crystal clear quality without the need to constantly play around with the aerial. It's made a real difference to me,' added Stephen, of Sanquhar Street, Splott.

Paul, of Longcross Street, Roath, who enjoys listening to rock music and BBC Radio 4, said the controls, which are specially adapted for blind or partially sighted people, make it easy to use.

'I'm thrilled with my new radio,' he said. 'There is no hissing or interference, and it's so simple to use. It sounds really good and I think the colour of the set and the illuminated controls are really helpful.'

Stephen and Paul have a degenerative disorder of the retina, known as retinitis pigmentosa, which results in a progressive loss of vision. They were diagnosed with the disease when they were five.

The sets can also be bought from the fund costing pounds 160, including postage and packing.
