'Sainsburys to You' takes its delivery operation in-house.
After a six-month benchmarking exercise, the results demonstrated that an insourced operation would yield a better quality of service for all StY customers. Allied to this change StY has also chosen to consolidate their fleet of 450 vehicles with Petit Forestier, the European market leader in the supply and maintenance of refrigerated vehicles.
Petit Forestier's approach to managing the day to day business was far better suited to StY's needs, which became evident in the early days of the in house trial.
The 450 Petit Forestier vehicles that StY has are custom specified dual compartment refrigerated 3.5T box vans. StY uses the adjustable compartments for chilled and ambient deliveries--in an approximate 3:1 split. Frozen goods are transported in Olivo insulated containers within the ambient section. Should the need arise, StY are able to remove the bulkheads in order to use the entire load space as chilled, frozen or ambient.
Petit Forestier and StY are now collaborating to develop bespoke vehicle designs, since there are significant cost savings to be made through vehicle design being tailored to store location.
