'SABADO GIGANTE' PRODUCTION TO REMAIN IN MIAMI MIAMI, Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- "We have no plans to move "Sabado
Gigante" production out of Miami," said Ray Rodriguez, president and chief executive officer of Univision. His comment came in response to a Miami Herald story published today indicating that discussions were being held with Televisa to move production to the Miami-based game/variety show to Mexico. "No such discussions have been held," added Rodriguez.
The Herald article reported that, according to producers of "24 Horas," a Televisa news program, "Sabado Gigante" host Don Francisco made comments during an interview for the program implying that discussions were being held and that plans would soon be announced to move production of "Sabado" to Mexico. "This is a complete misunderstanding of my comments," declared Don Francisco. "I simply expressed my enthusiasm, about 'Sabado Gigante' going on the air on Televisa's Channel 2, the leading television network in Mexico. We are committed to producing the show in Miami -- and that's where we'll stay." Univision recently announced an agreement with Televisa that will put "Sabado Gigante" on the air in Mexico every Saturday night. "I don't understand how the people who spoke to the Miami Herald could have gotten the impression that airing my show in Mexico would imply anything at all about moving production out of Miami." The Herald will publish a follow-up story on Sunday, Oct. 4, to clarify the misunderstanding. An Associated Press report of Don Francisco's interview on Televisa's leading news program made no mention whatsoever of any change in production location. The AP story refers only to Don Francisco's excitement and enthusiasm at the prospect of expanding his 30-year success story into Mexico. Antonio "Cuco" Arias, executive producer of "Sabado Gigante" also stated emphatically that he and his production staff are expecting no relocation.
"Miami is an increasingly important center for Spanish- language entertainment. Latin stars and production talent are creating a Hispanic Hollywood here. There are many advantages to producing 'Sabado Gigante' in Miami."
Ray Rodriguez pointed out that "Jerry Perenchio and his partners have repeatedly assured me that successful programs produced in the U.S. will continue to be produced here in the U.S." In an open letter to all Univision employees, Perenchio promised that "successful shows like 'Sabado Gigante' and 'Cristina' and others will continue to be produced in Miami." Rodriguez also emphasized that "Sabado Gigante's" entry into Mexico further testifies to the value of the program produced domestically utilizing the talent and resources readily available to Univision. "Univision made 'Sabado Gigante' a household word throughout the Spanish-speaking world," he said. "The show presents proof positive that a domestically produced program delivers not only worldwide audiences, but global advertising dollars as well." Just this week, the Federal Communications Commission approved the transfer of Univision's owned stations to Perenchio stating clearly that "the commission was unconvinced" by arguments opposing the pending sale of Univision and that "the buyer was fully qualified to be an FCC licensee." In response to the FCC action, Mr. Perenchio observed that "the FCC decision not only gives us a green light to proceed with the sale, but also acknowledges our commitment to producing and airing the best possible programs for Hispanic audiences throughout the United States.
