'Return Wallace letter' call.

THE only existing document issued by Scots hero William Wallace should be returned to Scotland, according to a politician.

In 1297, Wallace and Andrew Murray sent the Lubeck Letter to the mayors of Lubeck and Hamburg.

Written after the Battle of Stirling Bridge, it told German merchants that Scots ports were no longer under English control.

Mid Scotland and Fife Tory MSP Murdo Fraser wants has lodged a parliamentary motion asking that the historic document is "returned".

He said: "The letter is a link to a pivotal point in Scotland's history and gives an insight into William Wallace as the statesman and politician."

He wants ministers to begin a dialogue with the City of Lubeck's National Archives about having it on "permanent loan".
