'QF to celebrate at 7 venues, expects 15,000 participants'.
Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development is all set to celebrate National Sport Day (NSD) on February 10 and has invited people to join the fun-filled, action packed day.
This is in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Seven different venues have been prepared to host myriad of activities to engage public of all ages and gender on the occasion.
The highlight of this year's preparation is the inclusion of traditional games such as dahouri, gallinah and natou, square game etc alongside the activities that are meant for ladies only. People with disability have been especially invited to take part in interactive wheelchair basketball and table tennis.
"As against last year's turnout of 12,000 people, we are expecting around 15,000 this year to participate in 47 different activities planned at seven different venues located mostly inside the Education city," said Mohammed al Naimi, Director of Community Affairs while talking to Qatar Tribune.
Another highlight of QF's NSD celebration is the 'walkathon' which will start from Al Shaqab at 10 am and finish at Awsaj recreation covering a distance of 3.6 kilometres.
The walkathon is open to all for participation.
Alex Rosca, Manager, Recreation Services at QF, gave details of the different events that would take place during the NSD. According to him, the activities at Al Shaqab will feature equestrian events, including pony ride, meet and greet horses, mechanical bucking horse, dressage simulator, inflation race course, EZ ride and vaulting barrels.
In addition, there will be nutritional workshops to be organised by Weill Cornell Medical College Qatar (WCMC-Q). The workshops on healthy living would be conducted by Dr Shahrad. Besides, a cricket match between QF and RasGas would be held at the Cricket ground. A tug of war contest for kids will also be held at the ground.
Other activities will feature taekwondo and gymnastic finals, street basketball 3 vs 3, football training for kids, mini tennis, spinning boxercisem, running competitions and rowing.
"Besides having a healthy walk, the walkathon will provide an opportunity for the parents and students to take a walk around Education City and explore the educational opportunities available at Qatar Foundation," said Naimi.
The apt punch line selected for 2015 NSD is 'Unlock your Inner Athlete' and a theme song has also been prepared for the occasion.
'Eight months of hard work in preparation for this event will culminate on the National Sport Day on Tuesday demonstrating how small steps towards a healthier lifestyle can bring out the hidden athlete in all of us," said Naimi.
