'Patriot-News' Named 2007 World's Best NIE Program.

The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa., on Tuesday was honored as having the best Newspaper In Education (NIE) by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN).

WAN awarded its World Young Reader Prize to the Patriot-News in the NIE category for "Schoolhouse News," a program aimed at increasing student literacy and boosting home delivery by involving parents in the newspaper learning activities.

Judges liked the fact that the onus for learning, far from being the sole responsibility of the schools, was placed firmly in a joint effort between parents and schools in this clearly defined program that resulted in many memorable moments of fun-filled learning which will be the catalyst for the ongoing success of the project and the further development of future readers," WAN said.

The New York Daily News and the Denver Newspaper Agency, which handles the business and production operations of The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News, were named as runners-up in the editorial strategy category.

The Daily News was commended for "Children's Pressline Back Talk: Kids Speak, Officials Respond," a column that give children a chance to speak their mind on a community issue. The paper also organized "Media and the Community" workshops to teach kids about leadership and confronting community concerns.

Denver's papers were for "You Hub.Com: NeXt Gen," a community journalism Web site for 8- to 13-year-olds.

La Prensa Grafica of El Salvador was named World Young Reader Paper of 2007 for its annual youth edition. Each August on World Youth Day each year, the paper creates a special edition targeting young readers in which the paper is completely redesigned, and youth are involved on all its 168 pages.

"This showcase edition reinforced La Prensa Grafica's position in the mindset of a country where the young make up 35% of the population and identified the newspaper as a publication with fresh ideas for the future," WAN said.
