'Otso Diretso' bets slam Manila Water, gov't for water shortage.

By Minka Klaudia Tiangco

Senatorial candidates from the Otso Diretso slate slammed Manila Water Co. Inc., as well as the government, for the water shortage in Metro Manila in a press conference held on Wednesday.

Former Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada said it was important to hold authorities accountable for the "unexplained" water shortage in the eastern metro, where thousands of residents were affected.

"If we're talking about due process, then we should start here: give the authorities a show-cause order to explain the water shortage," he said.

Earlier, Manila Water Co. Inc. President and CEO Ferdinand dela Cruz owned up and apologized for the water shortage crisis in Metro Manila in a House committee hearing.

Manila Water should provide credit for those who were affected in the water shortage, said former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay.

"As a gesture, Manila Water should think about providing credits as consolation to those that were affected," he said.

Marawi civic leader Samira Gutoc said consumers should be reminded of their role to demand for quality goods and services from the government and water suppliers that have turned "lax."

"Marami tayong ina-accomodate dito sa NCR, pati mga foreign tourists. Nakakahiya. Nakakahiya na wala tayong tubig sa CR (We accomodate a lot of people here in the National Capital Region, including foreign tourists. mIt's embarrassing that we don't even have water in our restrooms)," she said.

Hilbay said there was a "clear failure in oversight" on the part of the government.

Magdalo Representative Gary Alejano echoed this sentiment and said the government should develop clear strategies to ensure food and water security in the country.

Gutoc also called on provincial local government officials to prepare for possible water shortages, since this phenomenon "does not only happen in Manila." #MatalinongBoto2019
