'Missing organs' in pots.

THE pathologist at the centre of the Alder Hey organ scandal secretly ordered the removal of body parts from hundreds of dead babies without their parents' permission, a medical tribunal heard yesterday.

Professor Dick van Velzen, 55, is accused of storing the organs in more than 2,000 pots found at the children's hospital.

But he failed to turn up at the opening of the tribunal which could ban him from practising again if he is found guilty.

The Fitness to Practice Panel was told the Dutch-born doctor stole the organs from around 850 babies after he became head of foetal and infant pathology at the Liverpool hospital in 1988.

Parents and staff will give evidence at the hearing in Manchester.
