'Memorial' to Colditz Brits under threat.
Byline: JOE MIDDLETON
COLDITZ is at risk of losing escape tunnels dug by British prisoners of war, a campaigner has warned.
London-raised Richard Vero, 66, who now lives in the German town, said renovations at the hilltop castle threatened to wipe out inmates' sacrifices.
He said: "Some 95% of people in the UK have heard of Colditz and the prisoner of war camp.
"Over here, only some people know about it and the rest don't care.
"But it is a vital part of British history. It would be tragic if the sacrifice of these people was lost."
The first of many Brits to escape the high-security camp was Army officer Airey Neave, who went on to became an MP.
