'Mediums' prey on the bereaved.

The headline of your GO! article about the so-called medium Maureen Hancock reads "Medium welcomes skeptics'' (Telegram & Gazette, Jan. 9). Sure, she welcomes them, she is just as happy to take money from them as she is from her credulous followers.

But, if she really means that she is willing to engage with skeptics and prove that she can talk to the dead, Mr. James Randi ( has an offer that she cannot refuse. He has $1 million that will go to any person who can demonstrate a paranormal ability in an objective test agreed upon by both parties. So far, no one has passed a preliminary test.

Mediums are frauds who prey on those who have lost loved ones. Remember Sylvia Browne, who told the parents of Sean Hornbeck and Amanda Berry that they were dead, when indeed both were alive and being held captive?

Your glowing article about Ms. Hancock makes you a partner in this reprehensible practice. What can we expect for next week's cover, a smiling picture of Bernie Madoff with "Trust this man to make you rich!'' as the caption?
