A WOMAN posing as a Meals on Wheels helper allegedly raided 23 houses on Christmas Day, police say.

Rachael Marie Watt was said to have carried a hot meal on a plate covered in foil while entering through unlocked front doors and attempting to steal cash and other items from handbags. Originally she was charged with one count of burglary, five burglaries with intent and one attempted burglary.

But Durham Police said yesterday more incidents came to light following press coverage of the case and she now faces a further 16 offences of burglary or attempted burglary in Darlington.

A spokesman said: "In most cases, the victims did not realise anything was missing until some time later."

Watt, 26, of Darlington, will appear at Teesside crown court on February 13.
