'MERGE WITH WASHINGTON MUTUAL' AD/MARKETING CAMPAIGN NABS ANOTHER NATIONAL AWARD

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bank Marketing Association has awarded Washington Mutual's "Merge with Washington Mutual" advertising and marketing campaign top honors in a national competition, the bank announced today.
The eight-month 1992 "Merge with Washington Mutual" campaign, which attracted nearly 55,000 new households to Washington Mutual, won the "Best of the Best" award in the multimedia category. The cat recognizes campaigns promoting the same product or image in three different media, such as a radio spot, a direct mail piece and a newspaper ad.
In the competition, a panel of recognized experts judged more than 600 entries in five categories: multimedia, print, radio, direct marketing and television. Of those entries, 97 received "Certificate of Excellence" awards based on originality, execution and fulfillment of stated objective. Of those, the "Best of the Best" were selected.
McCann-Erickson Seattle created the "Merge with Washington Mutual" campaign. Holly Haynes, the bank's advertising manager, accepted the "Best of the Best" award Monday at the Bank Marketing Association's national conference and exposition in San Antonio.
In June, the "Merge with Washington Mutual" campaign won a golden Effie award (short for effectiveness) from the American Marketing Association. In March, the Puget Sound chapter of the Public Relations Society of America cited "Merge with Washington Mutual" as the best public relations campaign in the Northwest.
With 3,500 members worldwide, the Bank Marketing Association, an affiliate of the American Bankers Association, has sponsored its advertising awards competition for 21 years. The association is a leading provider of marketing information, education and services to the financial services industry.
Founded in 1889, Washington Mutual is the largest local, independent consumer bank in the Northwest and the largest independent bank in Washington. At June 30, 1993, Washington Mutual had assets of $14.4 billion.
