 'MATINEE' BEGINS FILMING IN FLORIDA
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Principal

photography has begun on "Matinee," starring John Goodman, Cathy Moriarty, Simon Fenton, Omri Katz, Kellie Martin and Lisa Jakub. The film is produced by Matinee Inc. for release by Universal Pictures. Joe Dante directs this coming-of-age comedy based on a screenplay by Charlie Haas ("Tex," "Gremlins 2: The New Batch"), Ed Naha ("Honey, I Shrunk the Kids") and Jerico Stone ("My Stepmother Is an Alien"). Michael Finnell is producing.
Set in Key West, Fla., during the time of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, "Matinee" is a story about how a Saturday movie matinee drastically affects the social lives of four teen-agers. Goodman portrays Lawrence Woolsey, the B-horror filmmaker who comes to town to showcase his latest thriller "MANT" (half man, half ant, all terror!).
Considered one of Hollywood's most versatile and accomplished actors, Goodman will next appear as baseball legend Babe Ruth in Universal Pictures' "The Babe." Recently, he earned a Golden Glove nomination for his co-starring role in the Coen Brothers' critically acclaimed "Barton Fink." Among Goodman's noteworthy credits are "King Ralph," "Always," "Stella," "Sea of Love," "Everybody's All American," "Arachnaphobia" and "Raising Arizona." He also co-stars in the hit ABC series "Roseanne."
Moriarty (Ruth) first captured the attention of movie audiences with her role as Vickie LaMotta in Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" opposite Robert DeNiro. The role garnered her a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination, two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Newcomer of the Year as well as a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Her film credits include "The Mambo Kings," "Soapdish," "Kindergarten Cop" and "Neighbors." Her next feature will be "The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag."
British-born Fenton (Gene) can currently be seen as "Young P.K." (12-15 years old) in the feature "The Power of One." Fenton began his career at the age of 10 and has appeared in many commercials and tele- films in the United Kingdom.
"Dallas" fans will recognize Katz (Stan) who appeared in the nighttime soap as John Ross Jr. from 1983 to 1991. Most recently, he had a starring role in the NBC-TV sci-fi/horror series "Eerie Indiana." His movie credits include "Dinosaurs" and "Speed."
Martin (Sherry) is best loved by television viewers as Becca Thacher, the precocious teen-ager in the popular ABC series "Life Goes On." Other television credits include "thirtysomething," "Valerie's Family," "My Two Dads," "Highway to Heaven" and "Dallas." She has appeared in the films "Troop Beverly Hills," "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Doin' Time on Planet Earth."
Jakub (Sandra) can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed feature "Rambling Rose." Her film credits include "Sticky Fingers" and "Eleni." Her many television credits include the two movies-of-the-week "The Rape of Dr. Willis" and "The Story Lady," "Night Court," "War of the Worlds," "Friday the 13th," "Nightwatch," "The Twilight Zone" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."
Dante and Finnell first met at New World Pictures where they both began their film careers under the tutelage of renowned horror filmmaker Roger Corman. They first teamed as director and producer in 1980 in the offbeat werewolf thriller/comedy "The Howling" and have been working together ever since. Their combined credits include "Gremlins" and its sequel "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," "Innerspace," "The 'burbs," "Explorers" and a segment of "Twilight Zone: The Movie."
Dante's other feature credits include "Hollywood Boulevard" and "Piranha."
Principal photography will take place over a 10-week period at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., and on-location in Cocoa Beach, Fla. and Key West.
