'Landlord' accused of renting flat he didn't own.

A manhas gone on trial accused of forging official documents and renting out a flat that was not his to begin with.

Dubai Court of First Instance heard that a 39-year-old Egyptian went to see a flat in International City that had been advertised on the UAE website Dubizzle by a 33-year-old Syrian man.

The Egyptian says the Syrian even showed him ownership documents claiming that the studio flat belonged to his relative.

The Egyptian gave the man Dhs18,500 cash for the rent of the property, he said, and then stayed there for a fortnight before getting the surprise of his life.

"I went and lived in the flat for two weeks before the real owner came and shocked me -- saying that I was a victim of a scam artist," the renter said. "The Syrian man switched his mobile phone off.

"I couldn't find him, so I informed Dubai Police."

The Syrian man denies the charges of forgery, using the forged documents and stealing Dhs18,500.

The trial has been adjourned until later this month.
