'LET FREEDOM RING'; MCI DECLARES '800 INDEPENDENCE DAY,' ANNOUNCES UNPRECEDENTED NUMBER OF NEW 800 AGREEMENTS

WASHINGTON, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Exercising their new rights in anticipation of the historic start of 800 portability on May 1, more than 50 of America's largest corporations and four state governments collectively will switch an estimated one thousand 800 numbers from AT&T to MCI, MCI announced today.
"May 1 rightfully deserves to be called 800 Independence Day," declared MCI National Accounts President, Jonathan Crane, at a patriotic-themed news conference held here. "On May 1, 800 users can celebrate the long-awaited freedom to choose their long distance carrier without having to change their 800 numbers. It's an important change for the industry and an obvious opportunity for MCI," added Crane.
MCI announced the names of 13 of the 50 corporations and the names of four of the states which have agreed to move some of their 800 numbers to MCI from AT&T after the May 1 portability date. They are: Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc.; Blue Cross and Blue Shield; Cortaulds Coatings, Inc.; Diebold, Incorporated; Equifax Inc.; Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; First Financial Management Corporation; The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America; Kimberly Quality Care; ITT Community Development, Palm Coast, Florida; Random House Inc.; National Data Corporation, and National Westminster Bank. In addition, the State of Alabama, the State of Maryland, the State of New Mexico and the State of Arizona will be shifting 800 traffic to MCI. The remaining new MCI 800 customers have declined to be disclosed at this time.
MCI Grabs Two Points of 800 Market Share
"Today's announcement is the largest number of new MCI agreements ever disclosed on a single day and probably the largest number of new 800 customers any carrier has revealed at one time," added Crane. "When these 800 wins are combined with thousands of other new MCI 800 business customers--including many small and mid-sized business wins--MCI is conservatively adding more than $170 million a year in new 800 revenue, an estimated two percent gain in the 800 services market." Industry analysts estimate that the 800 market is valued between $7-$8 billion.
Diebold, a world leader in financial self-service systems, security products and customer service, also announced that it would switch its "800-Diebold" customer service number from AT&T to MCI. Frank D'Angelo, vice president of customer service and systems support for Diebold, made the announcement from Independence Hall in Philadelphia. "Our '1-800- Diebold' number is an integral part of our service for 15,000 customers across the country. Our reputation for quality and our 800 number mean fast, reliable service for our customers," said D'Angelo. "This 800- number portability allows us to keep our number and continue to provide a high level of service, while lowering our overall operating costs."
Kimberly Quality Care, a leading provider of in-home health care services based in Kansas City, Mo., announced from Independence Square in Independence, Mo., that it would move 800 numbers from AT&T to MCI. "We're pleased to move about 40 of our 800 numbers to MCI, the company that pioneered competition in the 800 market," said Gerald Lewis, director of telecommunications for Kimberly Quality Care. "We salute

the FCC's decision to open up the 800 market for full competition. We view 800 service as an important part of our home health care marketing and customer service programs."
Headquartered in Washington, MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of over $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
