'KIDS EAT FREE' THIS SUMMER COURTESY OF MARRIOTT, NESTLE AND PEPSI
 WASHINGTON, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- They say there's no such thing as a free lunch, but kids age 8 and under can get a free lunch, breakfast or dinner this summer as part of a "Kids Eat Free" promotion sponsored by Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites, Nestle Dairy Systems and Pepsi-Cola Company.
 Beginning this month, all of the more than 200 Marriott hotels, resorts and suites in the United States will offer youngsters a free Kids Menu entree and beverage in exchange for two proofs of purchase per family from three flavors of Nestle Crunch Ice Cream Bars.
 Families need not be guests of the hotel to take advantage of the offer. Up to two children can eat free for each adult entree purchased.
 "The promotion is designed for families living near a Marriott as well as for those traveling with young children," said Sean Handerhan, director of food and beverage marketing at Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites.
 A 1988 survey commissioned by the National Restaurant Association found that children are a key factor in over 36 percent of family dining out decisions. And, the U.S. Travel Data Center reported that parents with at least one child between the ages of 6 and 17 spend $31 billion per year on dining out.
 "'Kids Eat Free' offers parents and children alike a special treat this summer whether they're on a simple family outing or extended vacation," said Handerhan. "And, since we know that 41 percent of all families on vacation are traveling with children under 18, we felt that this offer could solve at least some of their 'Where should we eat?' problems, while providing additional savings."
 In addition to their choice of food, kids also will be provided with activity placemats, stickers and a travel cup, courtesy of Pepsi. The "Kids Eat Free" promotion will be promoted on 9.6 million Nestle Crunch Ice Cream Bar boxes and distributed in supermarkets nationwide between June and September.
 Handerhan said Nestle Crunch Ice Cream Bars were chosen because market surveys show that they are the top-selling ice cream novelty item in their category in the country and available in 95 percent of the nation's supermarkets. "This brand not only has far reaching distribution but high appeal with families with children," he added.
 Furthermore, ice cream was found to be one of the top choices of food among kids in a recent survey of Marriott hotels, along with several other favorites such as pancakes, spaghetti, chicken fingers, hot dogs, fish sticks and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
 This summer's "Kids Eat Free" program is an extension of Marriott's successful promotion last summer that offered up to 40 percent to 80 percent off hotel rooms with advance purchases for vacationing families, complemented by special dining discounts for children, which doubled Marriott's expectations of hotel occupancy rates.
 "When we saw the appeal this offer had to customers staying in the hotel, we decided to expand it to customers living near a Marriott," said Handerhan.
 Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites, a division of Marriott Corporation (NYSE: MHS), currently operates 200 hotels, resorts and suites with more than 900,000 guest rooms worldwide.

 This year more than 45 million adults intend to take a vacation with children, up from 42 million last year, according to a recent survey by the U.S. Travel Data Center for Better Homes and Gardens magazine. It also found that in 92 percent of the cases, an important motivation for getting away is to be together as a family.
 "Spending time with their families" also was the resounding answer from more than 100 children who took part in a survey as part of a "Happy Holidays Colorfest" contest in December 1991 at all nine Chicago-area Marriott hotels.
 Topping the list of kids' other favorite activities when staying in hotels included:
 -- Swimming in swimming pools 38 percent
 -- Watching movies in hotel rooms 22 percent
 -- Eating in restaurants 10 percent
 -- Playing video games 10 percent
 -- Bouncing on beds 9 percent
 Marriott Is Reaching Out To Families

 Marriott resorts are offering vacation packages for families traveling with young children that focus on recreational activities for the 12-and-under age group.
 Children can choose from a variety of activities such as beach games, relay races, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, movies, board games, nature bike treks and walks, and much more, with extended activities offered during peak summer months. Several hotels also offer full-day summer camps and in-house babysitting and daycare facilities with licensed attendants seven days a week.
