in Japan and the U.K. as Records Are Devoured Worldwide
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Pictures' "Jurassic Park" this week became only the second film in history to earn more than $300 million at the box office in its initial domestic release. With $301,032,940 in ticket sales in the United States and Canada as of Tuesday, Aug. 17, the Steven Spielberg film is the second highest-grossing motion picture of all time (excluding reissues) after Spielberg's "E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial," which earned $359,197,037 during its initial release in 1982.
Since its opening on June 11, "Jurassic Park" has set box office records around the world. In the United States and Canada, it achieved the biggest opening weekend ($50.2 million) and largest single day ($17.6 million) in motion picture history. The film passed the $100 million mark in nine days -- another all-time record.
After 32 days in release in Japan, the film has earned $66,722,173 -- the highest box office gross in Japanese cinema history, breaking the record held by "E.T." since 1983. "Jurassic Park" is the United Kingdom's most successful motion picture ever, having earned more than $50 million in 31 days. The film continues to shatter box office records in Thailand, Singapore, Korea and the Philippines. The international gross for "Jurassic Park" stands at more than $180 million, even before its release in continental Europe, Australia and other major markets.
From Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures, "Jurassic Park" is based on Michael Crichton's best-selling novel and stars Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Richard Attenborough. In the movie, dinosaurs are genetically recreated for the ultimate theme park. The adventure begins in wonder and excitement but soon takes a tense, suspenseful turn as the park's safety system is undermined and the dinosaurs break out of their carefully constructed environment.
