WASHINGTON, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- "Jeff" the dog, a model companion-pet from Massachusetts, left Washington yesterday after a two- day "Eduthon" on aging issues, Alzheimer's Disease and companion-pet therapy. Accompanies by gerontologists, T.V. actors, demographers, pet therapists and a school teacher, "Jeff" left his paw prints at area schools, senior centers, pediatric hospitals, animal shelters and on Capitol Hill.
In recognition of May being National Older Americans month, the "Eduthon" swept through D.C. to create awareness about aging issues. The educational program, sponsored by the Sandoz Foundation for Gerontological Research and Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation, included the following stops, visits and briefings:

"Jeff" the dog has traveled to 26 states and to many countries overseas to foster the companion-pet concept. Similar "Eduthons" have been conducted throughout the United States to raise awareness of the positive aspects of aging and to teach communities about Alzheimer's and companion-pets.
In addition, Betsey Douglas MacDonald introduced to the D.C. area a series of children's coloring books she wrote and illustrated to help children understand aging. MacDonald is also a co-founder of Jeff's Companion animal Shelter along with "Jeff's" owner, Bill Connelly, creator of the eduthon concept.
