'I don't see any other way than for her to resign'.

THE uncle of teenage Hillsborough victim Kevin Williams has called for the country's top prosecutor to resign after she refused calls for a new inquest in 1996.

Following last week's inquest verdicts, Danny Gordon, whose sister Anne Williams fought for new inquests, called for Director of Public Prosecutions Alison Saunders to resign after claiming her position had become "untenable".

Ms Saunders stood down from making decisions on charges over Hillsborough in 2013 after her appointment came under fire from campaign groups.

Anne, who died in 2013 before the new inquests started, applied to the Attorney General in 1996 asking for 15-year-old Kevin's previous inquest to be quashed.

But Ms Saunders, who was a legal adviser to the Attorney General at the time, advised against ordering a fresh inquest.

In a document she sent to the Solicitor General, released by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, she wrote: "There is nothing in the present application which raises new issues which were not considered in the earlier applications or by the Divisional Court in the proceedings for judicial review."

She went on to advise "there is nothing which makes a fresh inquest necessary or in the interests of justice".

Danny told the ECHO: "It was just another one of the brick walls Anne came up against."

He added: "I think her position is untenable.

"I don't see any other way than for her to resign."

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said: "This decision was taken in 1996 by the then Attorney General, not Alison Saunders.

"Her advice was based on evidence available at the time. Since then, substantial information has come to light in the Hillsborough Independent Panel report which justified a second inquest.

"Ms Saunders recused herself from all decisions related to Hillsborough upon appointment as Director of Public Prosecutions.

"Throughout the inquest process the CPS has worked closely with the families, and senior CPS lawyers meet with them regularly."
