'Himmler halt on killings to save himself'.
Byline: STEPHEN WHITE
EVIL Heinrich Himmler halted the extermination of 300,000 Jews at the end of the war to save his own skin, a book claims.
Author Max Wallace says he found files showing how in November 1944 Himmler, who directed the murder of six million Jews, forbade further killings, ordering the destruction of the Auschwitz crematoria and gas chambers.
Historians say this was a bid to hide Nazi crimes but Wallace argues Himmler thought he could negotiate peace with the Allies if he stopped the Holocaust.
He said: "These events may have saved 300,000 Jews. I discovered compelling documentation." His book, In The Name of Humanity: The Secret Deal to End the Holocaust, will be published next year.
