'Heart and soul' of AFS works toward continued strength.

The political conventions in New York and Houston weren't the only national delegate-attended meetings held this summer. On September 9-10, 85 officials representing 45 AFS chapters gathered for the 6th Annual Chapter Officers Conference in Des Plaines, Illinois, to discover ways to better serve their chapters.

During the two-day program, 15 speakers from AFS touched on the technical, management, governmental affairs and educational benefits the society provides, while creating a channel for chapter officers to exchange ideas and philosophies.

The meeting covered everything from how to pick speakers and promote meetings to issues such as sustaining a chapter during trying economic times. According to Leo Baran, AFS director of membership services, the meeting's goal was to address or answer every question or concern about the society and to send every officer away with at least one outstanding idea they can apply immediately to their chapter.

Said Mike Sisbarro, vice chairman of the Timberline Chapter: "I came away with more ideas than I could ever possibly implement, but that won't stop me from trying!"
