'HOLIDAY INN(R) FAMILY FUN SURVEY' FINDS
AUSTRALIA AND GRAND CANYON TOPS WITH TEENS
ATLANTA, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- "G'day mate!" That's what teenagers would like to say this summer if they could vacation anywhere in the world outside the U.S. with their families.
Australia is the most popular vacation destination outside the U.S. for kids ages 13-17, according to the recently released "Holiday Inn Family Fun Survey," conducted by The Gallup Organization. The survey also found that, in the U.S., the most popular national park/monument is the Grand Canyon.
When asked what country outside the U.S. they would most like to visit with their families, 27 percent answered Australia, followed closely by France, with 24 percent. Other countries in Europe, including Great Britain, Germany and Italy, ranked high in teen preferences.
The most popular national parks and historic monuments for teens, based on total mentions (first or second choices), were the Grand Canyon with 44 percent, Yellowstone Park with 37 percent and the Statue of Liberty with 32 percent.
Research Conducted for Holiday Inn's Family Program
The "Holiday Inn Family Fun Survey" was commissioned by Holiday Inn Worldwide to supplement its own consumer research for its summer family program. At the "Official Hotel For Family Fun," families can take advantage of "Kids Eat and Stay Free" offers, BEST BREAKS(sm) bed and breakfast packages and a complimentary "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?"(R) activity kit at check-in. Families who pay for their rooms with their VISA card can send away for a free Carmen Sandiego geography travel game.
"Knowledge about geography is critical for the young people of today, and it's encouraging to see that kids are curious about visiting faraway lands," said Ray Lewis, senior vice president of Marketing for Holiday Inn Worldwide. "Holiday Inn has always recognized what's important to families -- and we create programs that will appeal to both parents and their children. This summer, families will find affordable accommodations with real value for their money at Holiday Inn, plus a way to encourage geography education with kids, the travelers of tomorrow."
To ensure that the company was on track with its marketing program for families, Holiday Inn created the Holiday Inn Family Advisory Board earlier this year, withprogram ideas before they are introduced.
Kids' Preferences vs. Actual Vacations Planned
Recent findings from the U.S. Travel Data Center indicate that 60 percent of family vacationers with children plan to go to the beach/ocean, 51 percent plan to visit historical sites and 49 percent plan to visit theme parks/attractions. Thirteen percent of vacationers with children plan to travel overseas. "We anticipate family travel in general to be up by more than 7 percent this year," said Lewis. "Families are more optimistic about the economy and are anxious to take long-awaited vacations this summer."
 Additional Research on Young Travelers
Holiday Inn, the hotel company that encourages travelers to STAY WITH SOMEONE YOU KNOW(R) -- "who really knows you," knows a lot about its young guests. Research conducted for Holiday Inn by Yankelovich/Clancy/Shulman indicates:
-- Upon entering a hotel, kids tend to do the following: 57 percent of kids look for a pool, 43 percent flip the channels on the television, 43 percent bounce on the bed, 22 percent fight with siblings over choice of bed and 20 percent look through the room service menu.
-- 89 percent of kids agree that going on vacation with parents gives them a chance to get closer.
-- 92 percent of kids think going on vacation is a good way to learn about new things.
-- 76 percent of families say vacation is the only time they're together for every meal.
Holiday Inn Worldwide, which is owned by the UK-based Bass PLC, is the world's leading hotel chain, with more than 1,600 hotels and 326,000 guest rooms in 55 countries or territories around the world.
