'HIGHER GOALS' ON PBS SPONSORED BY TOYOTA
"Higher Goals" is an entertaining, new public television special

and in-school curriculum, which seeks to encourage young people, especially those who are eyeing professional sports or other "dream" careers, to put those dreams in perspective and focus first on getting an education. The half-hour television special features NBA superstar Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons and Tim Meadows of "Saturday Night Live," and will air nationally on PBS, Sunday, Oct. 11, at 5:30 p.m. ET, Oct. 17, 6:30 p.m. in Los Angeles (check local listings).
Sponsored by Toyota and co-produced by Kartemquin Educational Films, Chicago, KTCA-TV, St. Paul/Minneapolis, the special tells the real-life struggle of two young basketball players as they attempt to balance their basketball dreams with the realities of graduating from high school and trying to go on to college. Through their stories, the program will show that the skills of practice and discipline, which stimulate success in sports and other activities, can also be applied to success in academics.
"Higher Goals" will be supported by a nationwide in-school curriculum to be mailed to students in more than 4,000 inner-city schools, developed to help young people understand the distinction between the "dream" of playing in professional sports (or becoming a star entertainer), and the "goal" of going to college to prepare for a career.
In addition to the television special and curriculum, the "Higher Goals" project also includes a national competition in which students from NBA cities will have the unique opportunity to develop their own music videos on the subject of staying in school. The winning school in each city will receive a personal visit by Thomas or another NBA player. They will discuss their own personal views on the importance of education and answer student questions.
"Higher Goals" hopes that the media will be interested in a feature story about this special and will be glad to discuss some possible story angles. Color and black and white art is available upon request.
