UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Principal photography was completed today on "Greedy," Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment's contemporary comedy, starring Michael J. Fox, Kirk Douglas and Nancy Travis.
The film deals with a shameless bunch of rabidly greedy cousins who are scheming and competing to inherit the huge fortune of eccentric, manipulative Uncle Joe (Douglas), whom they hope may die soon.
"Greedy," directed by Jonathan Lynn, was produced by Brian Grazer. The screenplay is by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, and David T. Friendly and George Folsey Jr. are the executive producers.
Fox stars as Joe's long-estranged nephew Danny, who's always managed to stay above the vicious family infighting -- until now. Gradually he gets drawn into the fight over the potential inheritance, matching his wits with the circling vultures -- and with sly old Uncle Joe himself.
Travis ("So I Married an Axe Murderer," "Three Men and a Baby") co- stars as Danny's skeptical fiancee, anxious to see if he will succumb to the family tradition. Olivia d'Abo ("The Wonder Years") plays a seductive pizza delivery girl whom Uncle Joe takes in as his "nurse."
The competing cousins are being portrayed by (in alphabetical order) Bob Balaban, Ed Begley Jr., Jere Burns, Colleen Camp, Siobhan Fallon, Phil Hartman, Joyce Hyser and Mary Ellen Trainor.
This film continues Fox's creative association with Imagine and Universal, following the romantic comedy "For Love Or Money," due for release Oct. 1. Fox's versatile career also includes the highly popular "Back to the Future" trilogy, "Doc Hollywood" and "The Secret of My Success." Fox first achieved international popularity on the hit television series "Family Ties," for which he won three Emmys.
In "Greedy," Douglas, one of Hollywood's most popular and enduring stars, takes on a rare comedy part and his first leading film role since receiving the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award. Douglas has acted in some 70 feature films, receiving Academy Award nominations for "Lust for Life," "Champion" and "The Bad and the Beautiful." His other movies include "Paths of Glory," "Spartacus," "The Vikings," "Lonely Are the Brave," "Seven Days in May," "Detective Story," "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" and "Tough Guys."
Travis, one of filmdom's most appealing and sought-after young actresses, is currently starring opposite Mike Myers in "So I Married an Axe Murderer." Her other films include "Three Men and a Baby," "Three Men and a Little Lady," "Chaplin," "The Vanishing," "Air America," "Internal Affairs" and "Married to the Mob."
d'Abo will soon be seen in the feature comedies "Clean Slate" and "Bank Robbers" and is currently working on "Wayne's World II." She recently acted in the Mark Taper Forum production "Scenes from an Execution" and portrayed Fred Savage's sister on several seasons of "The Wonder Years."
Lynn recently directed the popular comedies "My Cousin Vinny," starring Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei in her Academy Award-winning role, "The Distinguished Gentleman" starring Eddie Murphy and "Nuns on the Run," which he also wrote. Lynn created and co-wrote the immensely popular British comedy series "Yes, Minister" and had directed numerous London stage hits. In this film, he plays the role of Douglas, Uncle Joe's groveling yet superior butler.
Grazer is currently producing three additional Imagine projects -- Ron Howard's "The Paper," Howard Zieff's "My Girl 2" and Gregg Champion's "The Cowboy Way" and is the producer of the forthcoming "For Love Or Money," directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. His many other credits as producer include "Kindergarten Cop," "Parenthood," "Far and Away," "Backdraft," "Housesitter," "Spies Like Us," and "Splash."
One of Hollywood's most successful writing teams, Ganz and Mandel are currently working on "City Slickers II" and "Into the Woods." Their other hits include "A League of Their own," "City Slickers," "Parenthood" and "Splash."
