BELL ATLANTIC TELCOS PITCH ANSWER CALL TO BEN FRANKLIN
ARLINGTON, Va., May 3 -- Well, actually, it's Bob Newhart who makes the pitch. Newhart, star of the CBS "Bob" show, plays Ben Franklin's Hollywood agent. It goes like this: "Benjie, baby! Of course I got your message. I can't afford to miss messages, especially yours. That's why I have Answer Call here at the house, Ben. It'll even take a message if you're on the phone. Trust me, Ben. Who got your picture on the hundred dollar bill?"
The new Bell Atlantic telephone companies' TV ads, created by J. Walter Thompson-New York, are running in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Richmond, Va., and Washington, D.C., from around April 28 through the first week in June. Both a 60-second direct response version and a 30 second version will air.
Direct mail pieces, scheduled for households in the Bell Atlantic region, feature Newhart on the envelope saying, "Off the top of my head, I'd say this is a message you won't want to miss."
Running in Newsweek, Time and Business Week, print ads show Newhart getting his Answer Call messages from his mother ("some sons actually call their mothers"), his Aunt Helen -- who wants a ride to Bingo, now -- and his daughter, who calls to say she's broken up with Lester and calls again -- they've gotten back together.
