'CORVETTE BULLDOZER' TO BE USED IN GROUNDBREAKING
FOR NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM JUNE 5
BOWLING GREEN, Ky., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The first -- and perhaps the last -- "Corvette Bulldozer" will be used in the groundbreaking for the National Corvette Museum here on Friday, June 5, Museum President Dan Gale announced today.
Driven by 82-year-old Zora Arkus-Duntov, retired Corvette chief engineer acclaimed as the "Godfather of the Corvette," the bulldozer will carve a road-size swath in the 33-acre site where construction for the 80,000-square-foot museum will begin this summer.
Attending the ceremony -- which will begin with a skydiver exhibition -- will be many of the 25,000 Corvette owners and enthusiasts who annually trek to Bowling Green, site of the Corvette Assembly Plant, for National Corvette Homecoming Weekend.
"The dream of a national museum to preserve the remarkable worldwide mystique of America's premier sports car is finally moving toward reality," Gale said.
The grand opening is planned for August 1993 during Corvette's 40th anniversary year. The museum is expected to become one of the top five tourist attractions in Kentucky and draw over 500,000 visitors its first year.
Chevrolet General Manager Jim Perkins announced earlier that the GM division will donate the 1 millionth Corvette -- to be produced on July 2 at the Bowling Green plant -- to the museum "in support of its goal to enshrine a great car and honor the great people who made it an American institution."
According to Gale, more than 400 Corvettes are expected to parade 15 miles through Bowling Green to the groundbreaking site, led by a restored 1978 Corvette which the city uses as a police cruiser.
Gale said the bulldozer which Duntov will drive will be camouflaged as a caricature of a 1992 Corvette ... "in keeping with Corvette's reputation for innovative technology."
A number of Chevrolet and General Motors officials from Detroit will attend the groundbreaking. Local and state officials on hand will include Bowling Green Mayor Johnny Webb. Also participating will be Paul J. Schnoes, manager of the nearby Corvette Assembly Plant, who is vice president of the National Corvette Museum.
Land for the museum was donated by two Bowling Green residents and one resident from Louisville. A national $12 million fund drive for the museum has already begun.
A temporary 2,800-square-foot Corvette museum annex, which was opened in a Bowling Green shopping center in 1990, "has logged more than 20,000 visitors from every U.S. state and 17 foreign countries in its first year," Gale said. "That's a tremendous indication of the universal interest in the Nnth Corvette, plus hands-on exhibits spanning Corvette's past, present and future.
There will be a 150-seat auditorium, a reference library with archives of Corvette history, technology, performance and design, and an outdoor 5,000-seat amphitheater.
The National Corvette Museum will be located at Exit 28 off I-65 just south of the Corvette plant in Bowling Green. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1953, Bowling Green, KY, 42102.
