 'CHILDREN'S BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB' SHOWCASES COMPTON'S
 ENCYCLOPEDIA IN BACK-TO-SCHOOL MAILING
 CHICAGO, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The 26-volume Compton's Encyclopedia is being featured in Children's Book-of-the-Month Club's back-to-school catalog.
For the first time in Children's Book-of-the-Month Club's history, the club features a major multi-volume encyclopedia. Compton's is being offered to club members in a special, four-color, four-page insert in the catalog.
The mailing will reach homes in July and August.
"Compton's is an exceptionally fine product and we are extremely pleased and proud to offer it to our club members," said David Allender, editorial director of Children's Book-of-the-Month Club.
"We are thrilled to see Compton's encyclopedia featured in such a visually appealing way by Children's Book-of-the-Month Club," said Teri Golden, director of direct response marketing of Compton's Learning Co.
"The 26-volume set, in its new royal blue binding, could not have found a more appropriate setting than this mailing to demonstrate what the new Compton's is all about.''
The redesigned set for 1992 consists of more than 25,000 illustrations and 33,000 articles. The famous "26th volume," the "Fact Index" of short entry information that is noted for its quick-reference usefulness, has been significantly enlarged.
Golden said the encyclopedia -- designed for family members from elementary school through senior high school and beyond -- fits with the marketing concepts of Children's Book-of-the-Month Club.
"This is a perfect match for Compton's, because Book-of-the-Month Club aims at children and interested parents in providing the utmost in both educational enrichment and wholesome, information-packed family reading," said Richard Shapiro, vice president-sales and marketing, Compton's Learning Co.
"This is the first time Compton's is being offered in a book-club venue, and we are extremely pleased to be associated with a partner with such recognized credentials as Book-of-the-Month Club."
Shapiro said Compton's is the only encyclopedia not sold directly in the home. "We believe we need to make encyclopedias more generally available and now are selling them in retail stores and through direct mail," he said.
Compton's has been a landmark American encyclopedia, first published 70 years ago, in 1922, Shapiro said. It long has been known for its exciting use of pictures, a feature he said was "built upon in the totally redesigned package that is appearing this year."
