'BUSINESS GENIUS' TORY DONOR GETS 10YRS' JAIL; OAP tycoon stole pounds 28.6m out of greed.

CROOKED tycoon and Conservative Party donor Asil Nadir was jailed for 10 years yesterday - as his young wife protested his innocence.

An Old Bailey judge said Nadir, 71, stole pounds 28.6million from his Polly Peck empire out of greed.

But the former billionaire's wife Nur insisted he was a misunderstood "business genius", convicted out of prejudice.

Inmates at Belmarsh Prison have already welcomed the Man from Del Monte apparently, calling him Mr Moneybags after he laughed and joked with them in the cells. Nadir's legal team spent 16 months attempting to prove he was too ill to answer 13 charges of theft due to heart disease.

Sentencing him for 10 charges of theft, Mr Justice Holroyde said: "You remained absent from this country for 17 years, and so delayed for nearly two decades the day of reckoning which has finally arrived."

The judge added that Nadir blamed everyone except himself for his downfall, using stolen cash to fund an already extravagant lifestyle. It was spent on businesses and homes from which he profited - even using pounds 1million to pay a tax bill.

The entrepreneur stayed in a pounds 20,000-a-month Mayfair townhouse during his trial after his 2010 return from North Cyprus. He could now be forced to repay pounds 5million in legal aid and pay compensation to Polly Peck administrators.

The total bill for the 22-year investigation, legal fees, expert witnesses, and prosecution of Nadir is estimated to be pounds 30million.

After Nadir was sent back to Belmarsh, where he will be held until transfer to another prison, his wife Nur, 28, said: "My husband is a business genius. He came from great wealth as a direct result of his and his family's working morals and ethics.

"The image that has been portrayed of him as someone who solely lived off the benefits of Polly Peck is a great prejudice."
