'BROOKLYN BRIDGE'S' GRANDMOTHER SOPHIE REVEALS CBS
'TRIED DESPERATELY' TO LOWER SHOW'S DEMOGRAPHICS
/ADVANCE/ NEW YORK, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Actress Marion Ross, 63, who plays the strong-willed grandmother Sophie on "Brooklyn Bridge," reveals CBS "tried desperately to make the show's demographics younger."
Ross states in the current (October) issue of New Choices For Retirement Living magazine, "They wanted us to shape shows around the children -- they tried. But, you know, it's our generation who love the show."
Series creator Gary Goldberg now plans to deepen Sophie's role for the new season, singling it out as "the most resonant" on the show. This assures Ross' continuing ascent as one of the richest and most poignant older characters on TV.
Too bad most other people in the television business don't think that way, Ross continues: "The other shows write these smutty little grandmothers who come in with the one-liners." She shifts into a quasi- southern drawl. "'Ya know, she's kinda sexy -- goin' out, doin' her thing.' Please. It's demeaning."
Ross observes in New Choices that Sophie "has persevered because she stands for something. She -- and the show -- are a celebration of who you came from, the survival of the generation you've stood on the shoulders of."
