'BEST SMALL HOUSE 1990' CO-STARS WITH STEVE MARTIN AND GOLDIE HAWN IN 'HOUSESITTER'
'BEST SMALL HOUSE 1990' CO-STARS WITH STEVE MARTIN AND GOLDIE HAWN IN 'HOUSESITTER' UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The House Beautiful- American Wood Council "Best Small House 1990" co-stars with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn in "Housesitter," a new comedy from Imagine Films Entertainment and Universal Pictures set to open on June 12, nationwide. The 1,800-square-foot, three-bedroom house, designed by Jonathan Lanman and Debra Wassman of Trumbull Architects of New York City, was re-created for the film in Concord, Mass., after production designer Ida Random ("War of the Roses") spotted the original in upstate New York. The award-winning design has been reproduced in more than 60 sites across the country, and can currently be found in 25 states in such diverse neighborhoods as southern California's Newport Beach and La Jolla; Stowe, Vt.; Patterson, Iowa; and Hazel Green, Ala. For "Housesitter," the filmmakers needed a house that would be innovative and photogenic enough to convince audiences that an architect, played by Martin in the film, would have it built as an engagement present to his girlfriend. Trumbull's ingenious plan divides the modest living space among three structures: a two-story main house, a master wing and a separate garage, all linked by a sweeping, covered, curved porch. Inspired by a cluster of old farm buildings, the house seems warm and familiar and appears to have evolved and expanded over time. Its friendly farmhouse wood exterior is complemented by sparingly modern, light-filled interiors and soaring spaces. The two-story living room features a dramatic window wall with a full-height, central chimney rising through an elegantly curved ceiling. Along with the lyrically shaped porch, Trumbull's design boasts such treats as a courtyard off the master suite and a separate dining room, both bonuses in a house of this size. Combining an old-fashioned romanticism with a contemporary sensibility, this house blends the look of yesterday with the feel of today. Indeed, it is right at home in "Housesitter," a '90s romp in the tradition of the great classics of the past. Teaming Martin and Hawn, the romantic comedy about loving, lying and living together is directed by Frank Oz ("What About Bob?") and produced by Brian Grazer ("Far and Away"). Martin stars as a jilted architect whose one-night fling with a beautiful con-artist (Hawn) leads to preposterous predicaments when she deviously moves into his vacated country home, passes herself off as his wife and wins over his friends and family -- all the while unwittingly turning an absurdly comical game of "house" into a romantic reality.
