'A course on JRR Tolkien, my precious? I wants it!'.

Byline: By Moira Sharkey South Wales Echo

A new course based on author JRR Tolkien has been timetabled at a South Wales university after a surge in demand from filmgoers who enjoyed The Lord of the Rings.

The popular movie trilogy about life in Middle-Earth sparked a rush of inquiries from those who wanted to study the author behind the Hobbit fiction.

And Cardiff University has responded by adding Tolkien to its list of part-time courses in the prospectus this year at the lifelong learning centre.

It is one of four new part-time courses at the university, which have been added after demand from members of the public.

They are:

The Foundations of Middle-Earth: Myth, Language and Ideology in JRR Tolkien's Literature;

Women in Britain in World War II, examining the key debates concerning the impact of the war on women's lives;

From Beatles to Britpop - Popular Music, Culture and Identity in Britain, looking at the cultural impact of popular music in the last 50 years;

L'histoire de France, which is a course for students who speak French at an advanced level. It will explore the history of the country from the middle ages to the 17th Century.

Kelly Cumisky, of the lifelong learning centre said: 'The new courses are responding to comments or requests made by members of the public or other students. One of the most novel courses this year has been inspired by the renewed interest in Lord of the Rings and examines how Tolkien used the world around him in his fantasy literature.'
