$14 MILLION AWARDED TO SAN DIEGO SHOPPING CENTER DEVELOPER
FOR ASBESTOS REMOVAL
LOS ANGELES, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The Los Cerritos Shopping Center built by San Diego-based Hahn Corp. in 1970 was awarded $14.15 million Thursday by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury that found United States Mineral Products responsible for the removal of cancer-causing asbestos fireproof material found in the mall, according to T. Michael Reed, attorney for Los Cerritos Shopping Center.
Reed said United States Mineral Products manufactured the asbestos materials which were installed in the Los Cerritos Shopping Center when it was built in 1970. For the last five years the Los Angeles County mall had been undergoing remodeling. The asbestos has to be carefully removed and it was estimated that clean up would cost $16 million, according to Reed.
After a one-month trial and three days of deliberations, the jury came back with a verdict totaling $14,148,692 in property damages.
H & H Cerritos (Los Cerritos Mall) was represented by T. Michael Reed and Tom Penfield of Casey, Gerry, Casey, Westbrook, Reed and Schenk in San Diego. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Newell Barrett heard the case.
