$10,000 DONATED BY FHP HEALTH CARE(R)
 TO SUPPORT SCHOOL RESTRUCTURING PROJECT
LOS ANGELES, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- FHP Health Care, one of the largest health maintenance organizations in California, has provided $10,000 to the Los Angeles School Restructuring Initiative Program to foster substantial reform at the individual school level.
A joint project of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), United Teachers Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP), the initiative provides management training and expertise, technical assistance and funding to selected schools to speed the reform process.
Announcement of the FHP gift, other donations and the grant winners came at the Biltmore Hotel today at the kick-off luncheon for Educational Partnership Week sponsored locally by LAEP.
"Donation of these funds reconfirms FHP's on-going commitment to educational excellence throughout Southern California," according to Christobel Selecky, FHP regional vice president.
"With the business community's expectations of student performance rising and school budgets continually being cut, it is absolutely essential for business to provide funds and expertise to support our schools," Selecky said.
To date, FHP has "adopted" more than 20 schools in four California counties, committed thousands of hours of staff time and invested more than $100,000 during the current fiscal year supporting its educational enhancement projects around the state.
FHP was one of seven area business and organizations to make donations to the School Restructuring Initiative program. The grant recipients were selected from among 33 schools that submitted proposals for evaluation by a review council consisting of business and community leaders and educators.
Recipients will use the funding for major curriculum restructuring, community outreach and innovative instructional methods aimed at improving student performance. Successful programs developed under the initiative will be disseminated to schools throughout Los Angeles and beyond.
Corporate executives from throughout Southern California were at the Biltmore today to learn of the grant winners and to prepare for LAEP's annual "Principal for a Day" event.
Tomorrow they will visit designated schools, working with principals to learn firsthand of the challenges and progress being made in education locally and throughout the state.
More than two dozen FHP executives are scheduled to participate in the "Principal for a Day" school visits.
