"WILD SWANS" WINS 1992 NCR BOOK AWARD
Most Valuable Single Book Prize in United Kingdom
DAYTON, Ohio, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- NCR Corporation today announced the winner of the 1992 NCR Book Award: Wild Swans - Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang.
Chang received a grand prize award of 25,000 pounds sterling (approximately $45,000 U.S.).
In addition, three other short-listed authors received 1,500 pounds sterling (approximately $2,500 U.S.) each. These authors include Felipe Fernandez-Armesto for Columbus; Michael Holroyd for Bernard Shaw - Volume 3, The Lure of Fantasy 1918-1950; and John Richardson for A Life of Picasso - Volume 1 - 1881-1906.
Sponsored by NCR's United Kingdom operations, the NCR Book Award is the most valuable single book prize in the U.K. and the only major award specifically for non-fiction works.
Commenting on the winning book, Terrence Stamp, actor, author, and chairman of the NCR Book Award judges, said, "We all found it a compelling read. Half a century of Chinese history is illuminated by images from the lives of three women. We chose 'Wild Swans' not because it spins fine phrases, but because it tells us something new."
Wild Swans tells the story of three women -- Jung Chang, her mother and her grandmother -- whose fortunes mirror the tumultuous history of twentieth century China. Chang, who left China in 1978, now lives in London and teaches at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University.
In addition to Stamp, other judges included Susannah Clap, literary critic and journalist; Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish history at Oxford; John Fowles, author of books including "The French Lieutenant's Woman;" and Francine Stock, host of BBC Televisions "Newsnight."
