The official Twitter page for Black Lives Matter campaigner whose death was announced earlier today has asked that only BLACK journalists request comment on her death 'out of respect'.

MirrorOnline reported earlier this afternoonhow Erica Garner - who rose to prominence after her father died at the hands of a NYPD police officer in July 2014 - has died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the age of 27.

Around two hours after her death, a post appeared on her official Twitter pagesaying: "Out of respect to Erica please do not request comment if the journalist is not Black."

The tweet has caused consternation among many of Erica's 38,700 followers - although some agree with the sentiment.

Twitter user Issa Queen tweeted: "Delete this smh (shaking my head) there are many non black journalists who understand and empathize with the social issues she fought for."

Another, Trey Williams, posted: "That's racist" - a sentiment echoed by many, including Nathalie Rivera who also tweeted: "Sounds as if your combating racism with racism. Which is obviously extremely contradictory.

"This is a disappointing tweet to find here. Apologies for your loss though, very tragic."

A user named Miri posted in reply: "You'd think you'd want any reporter, regardless of race, to report the truth. This tweet is disappointing."

Meanwhile CryptoPunk-X tweeted: "What? Why do you have to be a black journalist to request comments? That sounds very racist to me."

While it is not immediately clear who has control of Erica's Twitter after her death, some believed that her wishes should be followed, especially if they are from her family.

One user, Drael, tweeted: "Whether you agree or not, have some respect for the family. They have suffered tremendous losses. It is their choice."

And Zavier posted: "Key words: OUT OF RESPECT TO ERICA! And I know dats DEF what she woulda wanted. Folks who got a problem wit that need to CHECK themselves condolences to you and your loved ones, esp Erica's kids." (sic)

However others were insistent that the tweet went against what Erica stood for.

Robin Register tweeted: "Take a step back people please. Obviously someone is in pain and has access to this account. If you have followed Erica you know she was about people coming together. Erica has passed now you are attacking her because of what someone else has done."

And Liana Corr posted: "Out of respect for Erica, delete this tweet and go tell the hospital room hanger-on who told you to tweet that, Erica deserves better than to end on a racist note. A really heart-felt unity has blossomed around her; she commands respect from all quarters. Don't stink it up."

And Zeke posted: "Erica wouldn't have wanted this..."

Erica, a world renowned activist - whose father Eric was killed by a police officer three years ago - had been in intensive care since the weekend.

Family and close friends had previously said she had suffered "major brain damage" from a lack of oxygen - but had reportedly been holding out hope of recovery as doctors had registered some brain activity.

However it's now reported that she had in fact been 'declared brain dead a few days ago'.

Her mother Esaw Snipes said today: "She was a warrior, she was a fighter and we didn't pull the plug on her.

Ms Snipes added that her daughter "left on her own terms".

The official Twitter handle had earlier posted: "When you report this you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt. Her heart was bigger than the world. It really really was. She cared when most people wouldn't have. She was good. She only pursued right, no matter what. No one gave her justice."

Man dies after police put him in 'choke-hold' position

On July 19 2014, MirrorOnline reportedhow Erica's dad had collapsed and died after a police officer restrained him in the 'choke-hold' position.

Father-of-six Eric, 43, was being taken into custody at the time on suspicion of selling untaxedcigarettesin the Staten Island area ofNew York.

When he appeared to resist arrest, NYPD officers surrounded him, with one placing him in a choke-hold, wrestling him to the ground.

After the officer attempted to apprehend him, it is believed Mr Garner went into cardiac arrest before being pronounced dead at hospital around an hour later.

The story of Eric Garner's death made headlines the world over - after his death was captured on film by a bystander.

In a video published by the New York Daily News, Garner could be heard to repeat "I can't breathe, I can't breathe" as he was pinned to the pavement.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at the time he was 'troubled' by what he saw on the footage and promised a 'full and thorough' investigation.

He urged patience during the inquiry and added 'it is too early to jump to any conclusions', adding: "We have a responsibility to keep every New Yorker safe, and that includes when individuals are in custody of the NYPD."

New York Police Commissioner William Bratton insisted: "Choke holds are prohibited by the New York City Police Department and most departments."

NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo was not charged with any crime and remains in employment.
