"OPENING DAY' FOR 1993-MODEL FORD ESCORT
WAYNE, Mich., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Just as major league baseball

celebrates opening day today, the Ford Escort, and the employees who build it, are doing some opening-day celebrating of their own as the first 1993 production vehicle "crosses home plate" at Ford Motor Company's Wayne Assembly and Stamping Plant here.
In keeping with a baseball theme, the Escort was launched with Ford's own version of baseball's ceremonial first pitch.
Ross Roberts, Ford vice president and Ford Division general manager, hit a pitch thrown by Art Janes, Wayne plant manager, over the hood of the Escort, as Jeff Washington, president, UAW Local 900, drove the first unit off the line. John Zech, Wayne city manager, also participated in the festivities.
The Escort has received a facelift for 1993 and the new models will arrive at dealerships in May -- four months ahead of the traditional fall introduction period.
The 1993-model Escorts will have five new exterior colors, new grilles, taillamp treatments, wheelcovers and color-keyed bodyside moldings and bumpers.
The popular Escort GT model will retain its current front-end treatment, but will have a new rear spoiler, as well as new rocker panels and new aluminum wheels. Many of the new models also have new interior-trim materials.
The Escort was America's most popular sub-compact car for the 10th consecutive year in 1991 and Michigan's best-selling car last year.
The Wayne Assembly and Stamping Plant, which opened in 1952, employs about 3,900 people.
