"JERRY'S KIDS" TO BENEFIT FROM EFFORTS OF AMERICA'S MOTORCYCLISTS
CHICAGO, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- For many, the sight and sound of thousands of men and women riding motorcycles together is, by itself, exhilarating. But what if these same men and women were on an important mission as well? Inspiring? You bet! On June 14 and 15, tens of thousands of America's motorcyclists are expected to take to the roads to raise money for "Jerry's Kids" in the fourth annual Harley-Davidson National MDA Poker Run, the largest event of its kind in the nation.
During that weekend, more than 250 Harley-Davidson dealers across America will hold local poker runs and other fundraising events to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Poker Run participants "ante up" by paying a registration fee and drawing their first of five playing cards at their local Harley-Davidson dealership. Riders then follow a predetermined route, drawing a card at each of four stops along the way. Players with the best five-card poker hands at the end of the ride win prizes.
But the real winners are "Jerry's Kids," since all registration fees go directly to MDA. Through events like the National Poker Run, Harley- Davidson raised $2.1 million for MDA in 1991.
We've been a proud supporter of MDA for 11 years," said Art Gompper, the company's manager of special events. "Each year more and more motorcyclists enter the event. And the more riders we have the more money we'll raise to fight neuromuscular diseases." Harley-Davidson is one of 16 national corporate sponsors of MDA and has raised nearly $11 million on its behalf.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a national voluntary health agency that seeks treatments and cures for 40 neuromuscular diseases, including the muscular dystrophies, ALS and myasthenia gravis, through its programs of worldwide research, comprehensive patient and community services and far-reaching professional and public education.
Harley-Davidson Inc., the only major American-based motorcycle manufacturer, produces heavyweight motorcycles and a complete line of motorcycle parts and accessories. Its Holiday Rambler subsidiary is a leading manufacturer of premium recreational vehicles, specialized commercial vehicles and a diverse range of related products. Harley- Davidson Inc. is also a manufacturing contractor for a variety of industries.
