In the Solaris world, JNI (which has recently merged with AMCC) redefined enterprise storage area network availability and performance with its No-Reboot HBA driver. This driver was the first and only in its field to give network administrators the ability to dynamically alter target and LUN configurations, update driver parameters, unload and reload HBA drivers and add or remove devices--all without rebooting. Engineers at AMCC estimate that by eliminating unnecessary server reboots, this driver could save the typical enterprise-class Solaris customer more than 2 1/2 weeks of downtime annually. Designed for the most mission-critical and demanding SAN environments, the JNI AMCC No-Reboot driver supports AMCC 2Gb HBAs to combine unprecedented uptime with best-in-class Fibre Channel performance.
Today, it seems that almost every vendor in the storage market has jumped on the ILM bandwagon, especially considering the new government regulations on data retention that are driving "compliance" to the top of the IT priority list. The idea that data has different values at different moments in time and should therefore be managed differently in different phases of the lifecycle is a core design objective of the Arkivio auto-stor software.
Arkivio recognized the need for software that allows for multiple levels of "data valuation," where various criteria are weighed before any action is taken well ahead of the majority of vendors now touting ILM solutions. In fact, in 2003, Arkivio released the third revision of its Arkivio auto-stor software.
The Arkivio auto-stor software integrates SRM & HSM functionality in one complete ILM solution. It utilizes patented technology to identify and manage data and storage resources from "cradle to grave," classifies and assigns value to information resources based on business priorities, and automates the appropriate data management actions (i.e. migrate, move, copy, and delete) as those values change over time. IT departments can significantly streamline costs and management efficiencies using Arkivio auto-stor to consolidate and optimize their utilization of resources while reducing both the acquisition and management cost of storage over time. This granularity elevates the software well beyond many of the simple storage resource reporting or data movers/migrators that are available today.
The FireFly DM series digital virtual library is the world's first fully electronic, non-robotic, true, random access library to be based on Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (Serial ATA) technology. Delivering as many as 48 concurrent strings of data per library at an unprecedented 400MB/s, the ASACA FireFly is the next-generation nearline solution for High Data Broadcast and other such data intensive environments. FireFly offers up to four 2Gbit Fibre Channel ports, allowing JBOD, RAID 0,1,5 and RAID 10 to be mixed and matched.
FireFly offers much greater performance and economy than some leading tape installations, and provides on-demand, high-speed data transmission similar to online RAID. A more "green" solution, FireFly only requires about the same power as eight 120W light bulbs. The system also manages the reliability of the data based on Predictive Analysis of physical disk failure by monitoring the Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status of the drive over time.
In networked storage environments, FireFly advantages include: scalability, economy and performance. A point-to-point connection, SATA allows multiple drive ports to be aggregated into a single controller, meaning capacity-hungry environments can quickly and easily respond to their changing storage requirements giving organizations greater control over scalability, as well as over cost by simply adding another drive. With a minimum capacity of 4TB and the ability to scale up to 48TB in a single cabinet, and as many as 10 cabinets can be clustered together for up to 480TB of data storage. Pricing starts at $7,000 per TB.
Today, the cost- per-gigabyte of disk is no longer much higher than the cost of professional-quality tape media. This makes disk economically viable for many kinds of secondary storage. A wider range of enterprises, both large and small, are seeking to integrate disk into a comprehensive backup, recovery and archiving strategy. Most businesses realize that disk alone is not enough--for both long-term retention and disaster recovery planning, it is still necessary to use tape. However, the technical expertise to assemble a heterogeneous backup solution is still outside the reach of many small-to-medium business (SMB) customers.
In response to customer demand, Breece Hill introduced the Information Storage and Retrieval Architecture (iStoRA), combining disk, tape, network connectivity, and management software into a physically integrated appliance-style platform for disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup. The first product in the series, the iStoRA 4000, shipped in December 2003. Within its 4u-high enclosure, the appliance provides six SATA disks, a 1x10 tape autoloader, and a server motherboard with Gig-E connectivity. It ships pre-loaded and pre-configured with policy-based management software to govern backups and the migration of data between disk and tape. Within minutes of deployment, the iStoRA 4000 is ready for network-based backups to disk or tape.
Besides the seamless integration of disk, tape and software, the most innovative aspect of iStoRA is a truly plug-and-play approach to automated backup--making it ideal for SMBs, who face limitations in IT resources and technical sophistication. With iStoRA, a sound data protection and retention strategy is, for the first time, within reach for any size organization.
Computer Access Technology Corporation (CATC) added two new innovative features to their successful SASTracer protocol analyzer product line. The SASTracer is the industry's first analyzer supporting both 4-wide analysis features and bilingual Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA)) capability.
The new 4-wide configuration can simultaneously probe up to four SAS links at both 1.5 and 3Gbps transfer speed. It provides co-operative triggering and filtering across multiple (1, 2, 3 or 4) pathways, with the ability to record every frame associated with a single operation. This is a huge troubleshooting benefit to engineers trying to isolate protocol level problems within a 4-wide link. For testing within expander-attached storage systems, it adds simplicity, flexibility, expandability and cost savings.
With SATA becoming the established protocol for next-generation PC desktop disk storage, CATC also added a bilingual feature to the SASTracer. As engineers develop storage products, they want to design single enclosure subsystems that can be configured with SAS drives for performance or SATA drives for high capacity and lower cost. This creates the demand for bilingual storage protocol testing equipment--and the SASTracer provides that capability.
The SASTracer includes all this functionality in a compact and portable design that is equivalent in size to a large laptop computer. The SASTracer is built on a modular platform that supports other storage technologies, such as PCI Express and FC, with additional plug-in modules.
CATC's 4-wide, bilingual version of the SASTracer analyzer shipped in December 2003.

Retrospect Disk-to-Disk for Windows gives SMBs, workgroups and departments an easy-to-use, cost-effective data protection strategy with the capacity and price advantages of hard disk storage. With as few as two external hard drives, a business can implement an offsite backup strategy using Retrospect Disk-to-Disk. Retrospect Disk-to-Disk is the perfect solution for environments whose needs are not adequately met by low-end tape, or who are looking to replace an older tape format yet are not ready to implement a strategy based on tape libraries and autoloaders. As business needs change, the Retrospect family of products allows companies to move seamlessly across the spectrum of disk-based and tape-based backups.
Backup to hard disk storage is cost-effective and easily managed, as it does not require manual insertion of backup media. Traditional tape backup requires the use of dozens of tapes in a complex and error-prone grandfather-father-son tape rotation strategy. Other D2D backup software attempts to emulate this system, but this 'virtual tape' method introduces an unnecessary layer of inefficiency in tracking data, resulting in complications when restoring data. Retrospect eliminates this by relying on backup sets to organize data and transfer it to disk. A backup set can consist of parts of a single disk or multiple hard disks as required. Retrospect automatically spans disks when performing backups.
Like other members of the Dantz family of backup and recovery products, Retrospect D2D backs up only new and changed files after the first full backup. This patented Progressive Backup technology delivers 100% accurate restores without bringing back unwanted files and folders that were previously deleted, renamed or moved.

Maxell's DAT 72 media delivers 36GB of native storage capacity (72GB assuming 2:1 data compression) with a native transfer rate of 3MB/sec. The increased capacity of DAT 72 has been achieved through reduction in track widths and increased tape length. The thickness of the tape has been reduced to allow for increased lengths to fit into the same DDS form factor.
According to Bob Abraham, Freeman Reports, DDS tape technology represented approximately 58% of the worldwide low-end tape drive unit shipments in 2002, and with more than 6.9 million DDS drives installed worldwide, DDS is an established leader in providing price/performance value to the entry-level storage marketplace. With the improvement in capacity/performance, while maintaining the form factor and affordability of its DDS predecessors, DAT 72 broadens and strengthens this extremely popular and cost-effect tape format.
DAT 72 data cartridges leverage proven technologies from DDS-3 and DDS-4, while undergoing extensive durability tests under various environmental conditions. DAT 72 data cartridges are precision-manufactured to tight specifications and are subject to Maxell's 100% quality-assurance procedures. Maxell's DAT 72 pricing structure assures greater cost effectiveness and reduced cost per GB over previous DDS offerings.
High-capacity Maxtor MaXLine disk drives were the first ATA drives engineered, built and tested for multi-user, secondary enterprise storage applications such as near-line disk-to-disk backup, mid-line fixed content storage, storage arrays, and network attached storage. Available with ATA or SATA interfaces, MaXLine drives have a capacity of up to 300GB and are tested to ensure that they achieve enterprise-class MTTF of greater than one million hours in secondary storage applications.
MaXLine drives enable many of today's high-density storage systems from vendors such as ASACA, Ateonix, LSI Logic and Nexsan. MaXLine drives combined with these systems offer high-density storage at an affordable cost per gigabyte. This is especially attractive to organizations like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) because of its limited data center space. The Center recently received two Ateonix NAS appliances that house four 250GB MaXLine drives each, allowing NCMEC to have 1 TB of capacity in a 1U space.
NCMEC uses the NAS solution to store thousands of digital images that need to be readily available for kidnapping or child exploitation investigations. Increasing numbers of families have digital and video cameras to take images of their children. NCMEC digitizes all incoming images and is required to store all data and have it available anytime for evidentiary purposes. MaXLine drives allows them to do this while maximizing limited data center space.
MaXXan is the first company to completely re-architect the SAN infrastructure from a storage application and storage management perspective. The MXV320 (320-port intelligent FC switch) is a solution that gives IT managers the tools to simplify and centralize the management of business-critical applications, making them more productive and improving their bottom line.
MXV320 is the industry's first intelligent application switch. MaXXan's approach is to integrate applications into scalable storage networks, so users do not need to build storage solutions from a multitude of vendors. The MXV320 comes with pre-installed and configured applications such as data replication, mirroring, snapshot, virtualization, backup and NAS deployed from the storage network. The MXV320 intelligent application switch is built around a programmable switch fabric that enables the delivery of core storage services at the port level and a standards-based I/O engine optimized to run leading software applications. Utilizing a non-stop computing design with redundant components and 99.999% uptime availability, the MXV320 is a highly flexible system and can be configured with multi-speed, multi-protocol line cards, redundant switch fabrics, and embedded storage application cards based on user needs.
Competitive first-generation SAN switches provide only plumbing and require a complex collection of servers, appliances, switches and gateways in order to deliver the required storage applications. This complexity makes the storage environments more expensive to deploy and more difficult to manage, resulting in a lower ROI. The MaXXan MXV320 simplifies storage networks by integrating a highly scalable director-class switch with mission-critical storage applications such as disaster recovery, virtualization and NAS.
In August 2003, McDATA launched the Sphereon 4300, a low-cost fabric switch built specifically to meet the needs of the smallest enterprises, as well as the edge requirements of larger companies.
"McDATA has been extremely successful moving into adjacent markets, proving that they could take director class features and apply them to the mid-level market," said Nancy Marrone-Hurley, senior analyst, Enterprise Storage Group. "Now McDATA is making an all out assault on the entry-level switch market, offering high-end features and functionality at an extremely low cost."
The Sphereon 4300 offers Director-level features at an edge switch price. Using McDATA's exclusive FlexPort technology, the Sphereon 4300 starts with a port count as low as 4 and can be upgraded to 8 and 12 ports, without disruption to data traffic. The Sphereon 4300 includes McDATA's HotCAT technology, allowing customers to perform upgrades to their storage networks, without disruption to data traffic. The Sphereon 4300 easily integrates with middle market modular storage arrays, meeting the cost and ease of use requirements associated with customers who might otherwise use direct-attached storage (DAS) solutions. For example, customers purchasing the 12-port version of the new Sphereon 4300 will find the price comparable to competitive 8-port offerings. This translates into getting 50% more ports for the same price. No other SAN switch on the market today rivals the Sphereon 4000 Series fabric switches in value, features, reliability or flexibility.
The new FAS200 (fabric-attached storage) systems from NetApp are designed for entry-level and distributed enterprise needs: the FAS250, FAS270. The new systems provide what today's data-intensive enterprises demand from their storage systems: affordable reliability, centralized management, simplified backup and disaster recovery capabilities, scalability, and serviceability--and starting at an attractive price point around U.S. $10,000.

Troika's Network Storage Services Platform made a difference in technology innovation for its contribution to moving storage services into the network. Troika's platform is the first, next-generation intelligent platform designed specifically to provide both the high performance and the best level of SAN interoperability. The move to centralize storage applications within the network is driven by a desire to reduce the costs of management and complexity of deployment of SANs. New software techniques, such as virtualization, asynchronous replication, continuous backup, and information lifecycle management all aim at easing storage management.
Troika's Network Storage Services Platform is a hardware-accelerated intelligent platform available for hosting network-based storage services. Troika provides an open, easy-to-port to environment for ISVs and OEMs to develop and deploy these solutions, and is much easier to use compared to the complexity and difficulty of porting to intelligent switching platforms. Troika combines the best of both SAN appliances and intelligent switches with a wire-speed, highly interoperable, fabricagnostic platform designed from the ground up for storage applications.
Troika's wire-speed performance provides these services at the speed of a Layer 2 network switch--and does not introduce bottlenecks into a network compared to alternative, appliance-based solutions.
Since it is not a Fibre Channel switch and does not suffer from the interoperability issues of heterogeneous fabric switches, the solution is a highly interoperable platform for deploying next generation storage software. In addition, the Troika solution can also be used to connect disparate, incompatible storage networks.
Tripwire for Servers 4.0 was announced on April 14, 2003. Tripwire has become the de facto standard for technologies that assure the integrity of all information infrastructures, keeping the infrastructure in a "known good state." Results of Tripwire's vision are visible worldwide in many different industries with over 3000 customers, including: e-business corporations and key public sector organizations such as Intuit, AT&T, Ernst & Young, the U.S. House of Representatives, Washington University, Bayer and more.
Tripwire Integrity Management solutions establish the foundation for stable IT operations and systems security. Tripwire solutions support self-healing computing frameworks from industry leaders like IBM Tivoli and HP OpenView.
Tripwire for Servers software takes a "digital snapshot" of your system in its optimal good state. It then compares the system against that digital snapshot and identifies any deviations. TFS enables IT staff to determine what changed, when it changed, how it changed, who changed it, and to roll servers back to a known good state if the change is not authorized or desired. Tripwire is the only way to know for certain that servers have not been changed without your knowledge.
In this time of increased uncertainty, it's vital that companies are protected against external and internal threats. Tripwire allows companies to have this security, particularly in the last year, as they have gained more and more customers in the public and government sectors.
For best of product in backup & disaster recovery, UltraBac Software has created UBDR Pro to eliminate the cost of preventable computer downtime. After installation, automatic snapshots (exact images) of selected partitions are saved to local tape or disk, or network UNC path. A built-in Locked File Backup Agent ensures all files are backed up safely so they can be restored with integrity when required. Only active disk clusters within a partition are backed up, ignoring non-pertinent page files and hibernation data. This reduces the media space required and increases restore speeds. The snapshot is compressed on the client side before being transferred to a network storage location not only reducing traffic, but also increasing the overall throughput of the entire backup process.
Due to its fast transfer rate, UBDR Pro can restore a crashed machine's operating system partition in a matter of minutes--not the hours it normally takes to rebuild a machine using the standard file-by-file backup and restore method for recovering a failed system. The difference in the time and effort saved in recovering a failed machine using UBDR Pro versus other methods is substantial. UBDR Pro can restore in excess of 1000MB/minute on high-speed Gigabit networks, or when using LTO2 tape. To initiate a recovery, a user simply inserts a universal UBDR Pro boot CD and initiates the image restore. No other setup is required. After restoring a snapshot, a machine is recovered 100 percent to its last backup state after a quick reboot.
