"Best of the Best" products of 2003 will make 2004 a better year!

This month--and also in February--CTR honors those products nominated by their manufacturers as their "Best of the Best" in 2003. These are the products virtually guaranteed to make a powerful impact as the economy gathers speed in the months ahead.

This unique--and exclusive--section will allow you to keep best of breed solutions at your fingertips in 2004.

CTR will cover the technologies behind these products throughout the year, with the same authority and thoroughness you've come to expect. Computer Technology Review salutes the very best products of 2003--chosen by the companies that produced them, and described in their own words!

WestWorld polled the universe of storage companies via email, requesting each to submit one and only one product that typified their best effort. Further, to explain in 250 words or less the reasons for so choosing, and why the innovativeness of this product will help their sales efforts in 2004.

An External FireWire 1394 device for capturing, editing and exporting both analog and digital video, PYRO A/V Link now features component in and out, a unique feature for this product category. New Audio Lock Technology, an advanced solution for keeping video and audio in sync.

PYRO A/V Link is a universal solution for capturing video from analog sources (RCA, S-VHS or Component) such as an 8mm camcorder, a VCR, a TV or an HDTV set-top box (480i component only); and from digital devices such as DV camcorders and DV cameras. Captured video and edited videos can be output to analog sources (RCA S-VHS or Component) or to digital sources for burning to a VCD, SVCD, or DVD disk, recording to a VHS tape and published on the Internet.

With broad format support, consumers and businesses have a single solution for creating new videos and converting older VHS tapes to CDs and DVDs. They can also mix clips from VHS tapes with digital content to create videos that can be output to either the analog format (S-VHS tape) or the digital format (CD/DVD).


In the Solaris world, JNI (which has recently merged with AMCC) redefined enterprise storage area network availability and performance with its No-Reboot HBA driver. This driver was the first and only in its field to give network administrators the ability to dynamically alter target and LUN configurations, update driver parameters, unload and reload HBA drivers and add or remove devices--all without rebooting. Engineers at AMCC estimate that by eliminating unnecessary server reboots, this driver could save the typical enterprise-class Solaris customer more than 2 1/2 weeks of downtime annually. Designed for the most mission-critical and demanding SAN environments, the JNI AMCC No-Reboot driver supports AMCC 2Gb HBAs to combine unprecedented uptime with best-in-class Fibre Channel performance.


Today, it seems that almost every vendor in the storage market has jumped on the ILM bandwagon, especially considering the new government regulations on data retention that are driving "compliance" to the top of the IT priority list. The idea that data has different values at different moments in time and should therefore be managed differently in different phases of the lifecycle is a core design objective of the Arkivio auto-stor software.

Arkivio recognized the need for software that allows for multiple levels of "data valuation," where various criteria are weighed before any action is taken well ahead of the majority of vendors now touting ILM solutions. In fact, in 2003, Arkivio released the third revision of its Arkivio auto-stor software.


The Arkivio auto-stor software integrates SRM & HSM functionality in one complete ILM solution. It utilizes patented technology to identify and manage data and storage resources from "cradle to grave," classifies and assigns value to information resources based on business priorities, and automates the appropriate data management actions (i.e. migrate, move, copy, and delete) as those values change over time. IT departments can significantly streamline costs and management efficiencies using Arkivio auto-stor to consolidate and optimize their utilization of resources while reducing both the acquisition and management cost of storage over time. This granularity elevates the software well beyond many of the simple storage resource reporting or data movers/migrators that are available today.

The FireFly DM series digital virtual library is the world's first fully electronic, non-robotic, true, random access library to be based on Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (Serial ATA) technology. Delivering as many as 48 concurrent strings of data per library at an unprecedented 400MB/s, the ASACA FireFly is the next-generation nearline solution for High Data Broadcast and other such data intensive environments. FireFly offers up to four 2Gbit Fibre Channel ports, allowing JBOD, RAID 0,1,5 and RAID 10 to be mixed and matched.


FireFly offers much greater performance and economy than some leading tape installations, and provides on-demand, high-speed data transmission similar to online RAID. A more "green" solution, FireFly only requires about the same power as eight 120W light bulbs. The system also manages the reliability of the data based on Predictive Analysis of physical disk failure by monitoring the Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status of the drive over time.

In networked storage environments, FireFly advantages include: scalability, economy and performance. A point-to-point connection, SATA allows multiple drive ports to be aggregated into a single controller, meaning capacity-hungry environments can quickly and easily respond to their changing storage requirements giving organizations greater control over scalability, as well as over cost by simply adding another drive. With a minimum capacity of 4TB and the ability to scale up to 48TB in a single cabinet, and as many as 10 cabinets can be clustered together for up to 480TB of data storage. Pricing starts at $7,000 per TB.

Today, the cost- per-gigabyte of disk is no longer much higher than the cost of professional-quality tape media. This makes disk economically viable for many kinds of secondary storage. A wider range of enterprises, both large and small, are seeking to integrate disk into a comprehensive backup, recovery and archiving strategy. Most businesses realize that disk alone is not enough--for both long-term retention and disaster recovery planning, it is still necessary to use tape. However, the technical expertise to assemble a heterogeneous backup solution is still outside the reach of many small-to-medium business (SMB) customers.

In response to customer demand, Breece Hill introduced the Information Storage and Retrieval Architecture (iStoRA), combining disk, tape, network connectivity, and management software into a physically integrated appliance-style platform for disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup. The first product in the series, the iStoRA 4000, shipped in December 2003. Within its 4u-high enclosure, the appliance provides six SATA disks, a 1x10 tape autoloader, and a server motherboard with Gig-E connectivity. It ships pre-loaded and pre-configured with policy-based management software to govern backups and the migration of data between disk and tape. Within minutes of deployment, the iStoRA 4000 is ready for network-based backups to disk or tape.


Besides the seamless integration of disk, tape and software, the most innovative aspect of iStoRA is a truly plug-and-play approach to automated backup--making it ideal for SMBs, who face limitations in IT resources and technical sophistication. With iStoRA, a sound data protection and retention strategy is, for the first time, within reach for any size organization.

Computer Access Technology Corporation (CATC) added two new innovative features to their successful SASTracer protocol analyzer product line. The SASTracer is the industry's first analyzer supporting both 4-wide analysis features and bilingual Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA)) capability.

The new 4-wide configuration can simultaneously probe up to four SAS links at both 1.5 and 3Gbps transfer speed. It provides co-operative triggering and filtering across multiple (1, 2, 3 or 4) pathways, with the ability to record every frame associated with a single operation. This is a huge troubleshooting benefit to engineers trying to isolate protocol level problems within a 4-wide link. For testing within expander-attached storage systems, it adds simplicity, flexibility, expandability and cost savings.

With SATA becoming the established protocol for next-generation PC desktop disk storage, CATC also added a bilingual feature to the SASTracer. As engineers develop storage products, they want to design single enclosure subsystems that can be configured with SAS drives for performance or SATA drives for high capacity and lower cost. This creates the demand for bilingual storage protocol testing equipment--and the SASTracer provides that capability.


The SASTracer includes all this functionality in a compact and portable design that is equivalent in size to a large laptop computer. The SASTracer is built on a modular platform that supports other storage technologies, such as PCI Express and FC, with additional plug-in modules.

CATC's 4-wide, bilingual version of the SASTracer analyzer shipped in December 2003.

Certance introduced the CP 3100 Series data protection solution for small businesses and departmental workgroups seeking a fast, reliable and economical D2D2T solution for business-critical data. It is ideal for businesses seeking to protect up to 1-TB of data and resolves the issue of shrinking backup windows associated with traditional tape devices--making full backups during lunchtime a reality. Designed to simplify and automate data protection procedures, the CP 3100 provides enhanced backup/restore performance, simple and cost-effective data protection, remote management and proactive monitoring and notification, and effective data protection management for both existing legacy tape environments and businesses without a data protection plan.


The CP 3100 provides the features and functionality of high-end solutions in a 5.25-inch half-height device form factor with key Intel technology and processors for a truly flexible solution at an SMB-affordable value with a starting price of less than $1500 (MSRP). The CP 3100 is a turnkey solution that is easy to install, easy to operate and easy to manage. It dynamically configures itself to recognize and emulate the attached tape drive automatically, dramatically simplifying installation and configuration. The CP 3100 goes even further with features that automatically migrate date stored on disk to tape for archiving, without intervention from the host or need for 'cloning' software. This feature relieves many of the operating constraints faced by IT managers who have limited backup windows. In addition, CP 3100 enables remote setup, management and monitoring via any Web browser to provide users with peace of mind.

The award-winning Velocity Series backup system offers an innovative solution using the new Serial ATA standards for storage devices. It is the first of its kind to offer a Serial ATA interface as an external desktop backup system. With data transfer rates over three times faster than USB2.0 or FireWire (up to 1.5Gb/sec), the new Velocity Series from CMS Products is the fastest desktop backup and disaster recovery solution available. The Velocity Series backup system incorporates CMS's user-friendly BounceBack Professional software and a high-speed Serial ATA (SATA) interface to create the industry's first externally bootable Windows (XP and 2000) device. The CMS Velocity Series backup system is designed for both individual and corporate users with capacities ranging from 80GB to 200GB.


The CNT UltraNet Edge 3000 Storage Router is a flexible, user-friendly and intelligent multi-protocol storage networking platform that interconnects and extends FC and FICON SANs over IP, ATM or SONET network infrastructures to create enterprise-wide storage networks, improving information access and streamlining storage management to drive business efficiency.

Introduced in late 2003, the UltraNet Edge 3000 includes numerous new technological innovations to help customers move information anywhere, anytime, with the highest performance available and at dramatically reduced costs. Some new innovations include:

* State Change Management isolates faults from propagating through a fabric domain and minimizes the impact of component outages.

* SAN routing for disk mirroring applications that support multi-point replication can enable data volumes to be concurrently replicated to multiple geographically separated sites, ensuring data consistency.

* Management software allows users to view, configure and manage their entire remote storage application across multiple protocols and domains through a single console, with correlation and policy engines to facilitate cross-domain analysis of performance, fault isolation and application impact.

* QoS capability enables customers with different storage applications running through the same Edge 3000 to give priority access to the most critical applications as required.

Lastly, the Edge 3000 is customer proven. NTT Communications Corporation, the largest long-distance and international telecommunications provider in Japan, tested a range of storage extension devices and selected the CNT Edge 3000 because of its superior performance, reliability and ease of use for their new "WIDE SAN" managed service offering.


Retrospect Disk-to-Disk for Windows gives SMBs, workgroups and departments an easy-to-use, cost-effective data protection strategy with the capacity and price advantages of hard disk storage. With as few as two external hard drives, a business can implement an offsite backup strategy using Retrospect Disk-to-Disk. Retrospect Disk-to-Disk is the perfect solution for environments whose needs are not adequately met by low-end tape, or who are looking to replace an older tape format yet are not ready to implement a strategy based on tape libraries and autoloaders. As business needs change, the Retrospect family of products allows companies to move seamlessly across the spectrum of disk-based and tape-based backups.

Backup to hard disk storage is cost-effective and easily managed, as it does not require manual insertion of backup media. Traditional tape backup requires the use of dozens of tapes in a complex and error-prone grandfather-father-son tape rotation strategy. Other D2D backup software attempts to emulate this system, but this 'virtual tape' method introduces an unnecessary layer of inefficiency in tracking data, resulting in complications when restoring data. Retrospect eliminates this by relying on backup sets to organize data and transfer it to disk. A backup set can consist of parts of a single disk or multiple hard disks as required. Retrospect automatically spans disks when performing backups.


Like other members of the Dantz family of backup and recovery products, Retrospect D2D backs up only new and changed files after the first full backup. This patented Progressive Backup technology delivers 100% accurate restores without bringing back unwanted files and folders that were previously deleted, renamed or moved.

The EMC Symmetrix DMX series of information storage systems is based on the revolutionary new, patented Direct Matrix Architecture and sets a new trajectory for high-end storage scalability, performance, availability, functionality and affordability.


The Direct Matrix Architecture transcends traditional switch-and bus-based architectures with a simple yet powerful point-to-point matrix interconnect that drives high-speed, non-blocking data transport and modular flexibility into a fundamentally new storage system design. Exabyte's VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x10 1u is one of the most significant storage products of 2003 because it achieves a break-through in price, performance and capacity that opens the door for thousands of businesses to graduate up to automated backup for the first time. Autoloaders have traditionally been too expensive for companies with tight IT budgets (such as SMB/departmental), but the VXA-2 PacketLoader has a price comparable to the cost of many individual tape drives making automation truly affordable for cost-conscious businesses.


In addition to radically lowering the cost of automation for SMB/departmental customers, the VXA-2 PacketLoader offers more capacity for the dollar than any other automated backup and restore product: For the price of a standalone drive (less than $2500), the VXA-2 PacketLoader offers two weeks of unattended backup (ten 160 GB cartridges for up to 1.6 TB of capacity) in an ultra-compact 1u form factor. In 2003, Fuji Photo Film, U.S.A, Inc., announced the first products to utilize the company's patented nanometer-scale thin layer coated magnetic recording media, called "NANOCUBIC." By building on the company's 70 years of coating innovation NANOCUBIC created a format for industry-leading performance, capacity and reliability in a tape with an ultra-thin layer coating that produces higher resolution for recording digital data.

The increasingly digital world demands trustworthy and large-capacity storage solutions. NANOCUBIC achieves both with a patented combination of a new binder that provides stable chemical performance and a super-fine magnetic particle that provides stable physical performance.


NANOCUBIC technology delivers data cartridges and digital videotapes that can store 1-TB native (uncompressed) and floppy disk capacities to 3GBs. As outlined by the 1-TB cartridge roadmap, this is equivalent to 16 days of continuously running DVD movies, or 8,000 times more data than a human brain retains in a lifetime.

July 2003, Iomega Corporation announced the DCT drive, also powered by NANOCUBIC technology. The tiny stainless-steel cartridge offers consumers 1.5GB of rewriteable storage in a package weighing 9 grams and about the size of a matchbook.


September 12, 2003, Fujifilm announced the first product to ship incorporating NANOCUBIC technology, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592. IBM began shipments of both the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 tape drive and cartridge on September 12.

November 13, 2003, Fujifilm announced a joint media development agreement with StorageTek that will help StorageTek develop next generation enterprise tape storage solutions using Fujifilm's NANOCUBIC technology.

Compatible with Ultrium/LTO generation 2 drives, Imation Ultrium 2 Cartridges provide up to 400GB compressed capacity and up to 80MB/s transfer rate. Durability enabled by Imation dual-layer media using next generation Metal Particulate (MP3) media formulation. Enterprise-class testing ensures uncompromising reliability and out-of-the-box performance.

* Imation Ultrium Generation 2 Tape Cartridges also feature innovative and patented technologies that make Imation's cartridge robust, including:

In May 2003, LSI Logic introduced its MegaRAID SATA (serial ATA) 150-6. The 150-6 is a half-size, 6-port enterprise-class serial ATA RAID storage adapter with optional battery backup support for servers, workstations and network storage environments.

As the industry's only SATA RAID adapter to feature optional battery backup support, the LSI Logic SATA 150-6 is ideal for customers requiring the highest levels of fault-tolerant data protection. The battery backup unit (BBU) provides backup for data currently stored in the on-board cache memory during intermittent power loss to the controller. In the event of a power failure, the BBU can hold data in the cache for 53 hours or more. The 150-6 features 64MB of ECC SDRAM memory. Once the power is restored to the controller, the data can be saved to disk.

Along with increased data protection, the MegaRAID SATA 150-6 also delivers leading performance with up to 150MB/sec per channel and total throughput up to 528MB/sec. Model 1 appliances are capable of supporting up to two tape drives in the internal library, supporting both on-line restore and off-site disaster recovery simultaneously. Depending on the model and components, some Model 1s can support up to two 200GB drives for use in the disk storage pool and may also include a ten-slot library and single AIT drive. Potential storage space can range from 500GB to over 2.2TB, supporting typical user environments ranging from 100GB to about 400GB. There are currently three series of Model 1 appliances: The K1 series uses Qualstar technology, the Y1 series uses Sony technology, and the V1 series uses Overland technology. The K1 and V1 models support AIT, SDLT, or LTO tape technology, including the latest LTO-2 drives. The Y1 supports AIT only.
