"Balloting and Ballyhoo," "political wit," and walking tours of city hall.

"Applesauce." That's how humorist Will Rogers characterized politics. this is a fitting month to learn about other political impressions from the past. Walking tours of San Francisco's Civic Center and two exhibits at the Main Library coincide with the Democratic National Convention (July 16 to 19).

Guided walks. Every Thursday at noon, City Guides (sponsored by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library) lead groups through the baroque revival City Hall, designed by architects Bakewell and Brown. Built to show that the city had risen in triumph after the 1906 earthquake, it was completed in 1916.

The free tours go into the supervisors' chambers and out on the mayor's balcony. Meet at the San Francisco Room (third floor) in Main Library, 200 Larkin Street. For details, call (415) 558-3770.

Main Library exhibits. "Political Wit and Humor," in the third-floor elevator lobby, shows how political figures have been satirized in books and pamphlets, and includes cartoons of all the presidents.

"Balloting and Ballyhoo: Historical Survey of Politicking in San Francisco," south hall of third floor, has historic campaign buttons, photographs, cartoons. Hours are 10 to 6 Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays; 10 to 9 Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays; 1 to 5 Sundays. Exhibits run through July 31.
