The image of the written text may be sensed "off line" from a piece of paper by optical scanning (optical character recognition).  engines, today introduced smARTcommand for Windows 95, enabling users of desktop and portable computers to reliably and accurately launch and control applications, even in noisy environments.

smARTcommand is based on a highly flexible voice recognition engine that adapts to each individual users voice, regardless of language or accent. Users can add new words to smARTcommands vocabulary to build their own personal voice library.

Users can say commands in a normal speaking voice, as smARTcommand compensates for variations in tone and background noise using advanced signal processing See DSP.  and pattern recognition technologies.

smARTcommand allows users to perform a wide range of everyday tasks, such as launching applications or dialing phone numbers, with simple, programmable voice commands. Voice prompts A recorded message that is played by auto attendants, interactive voice response (IVR) systems, message-on-hold systems and other voice processing tools. The "prompt" is a request to input some data; a recording that does not ask for feedback is more properly called a voice "message." , colorful animated screens and helpful browsers simplify programming.
