Rhondda Fach Gala Concert Rhondda Fach Sports Centre, Tylorstown INTERNATIONAL soprano Lesley Garrett will visit Rhondda next month as one of the guest performers at an annual concert.

She will join Pendyrus Male Choir for the Rhondda Fach Gala Concert in Tylorstown on May 10.

From small beginnings, the gala concert has grown from an attempt to regenerate music in the area to one of the most important musical events in the calendar.

During the early 80s, Rhondda Fach lost its showpiece auditorium the 800-seat theatre housed in the Ferndale Workmen's Hall. With its demolition the shop window for the valley's choral societies, amateur operatic societies and male choirs was lost.

'But, after 10 years of hard work, Rhondda Fach Music Partnership has seen a transformation; supporters of this musical extravaganza have packed into Rhondda Fach Sports Centre during the past few years to experience the likes of Katherine Jenkins, Rebecca Evans, John Owen Jones, Shan Cothi and Gwawr Edwards at the annual event.

This year's audiences will be treated to an evening of music which will include tracks from Garrett's latest CD, A North Country Lass, which is a collection of folk songs as well as some of our best-loved operatic choruses. Joining her will be the internationally-acclaimed Pendyrus Male Choir.

They will team up for combined performances of such favourites as Dvorak's Goin' Home and Climb Every Mountain, a particular favourite of Garrett.

The finale of the concert will feature a medley from Les Miserables when the singers will be joined by 15-year-old soprano Megan Phelan, and two young choristers, Ashley Richards and Christian Bright.

Next year will be a special occasion for Pendyrus Male Choir when they celebrate 90 continuous years of music making.

They already have tenor Rhys Meirion and former X Factor finalists Rhydian Roberts lined up to help them celebrate the milestone birthday.
