openNET Coalition Quadruples Membership.

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999--

Internet Service Providers Rush to Join as Open

Access Fight Intensifies

The openNET Coaliton announced today that it has quadrupled its members since the beginning of the summer as growing numbers of Internet Service Providers join the fight for a competitive, high-speed Internet cable network.

"As ISPs around the country begin to migrate to broadband, more and more of them are calling us to support the fight that will assure competition in the next generation of the Internet," said Greg Simon, co-director of the openNET Coaltion.

Citilink Internet, IgLou Internet Services and Easy Web Solutions are among the 231 new member companies that have joined the openNET Coalition in the last four weeks, raising the total membership from 84 in early June to roughly 400 companies nationwide today.

New members represent small business interests in 38 states, including: Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Member companies are watching developments in other cities, contacting the local officials responsible for overseeing local cable franchise agreements and making their voices heard through petitions and referendum.

OpenNET has been fighting on the local and federal level to require cable companies to provide broadband Internet access Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just "broadband", is high speed Internet access—typically contrasted with dial-up access over modem.

Dial-up modems are generally only capable of a maximum bitrate of 56 kbit/s (kilobits per second) and require the full use of a

. AT&T, the former telephone monopoly, now has access to more than 60 percent of American homes through its purchase of cable giants Tele-Communications, Inc. and MediaOne. But AT&T and the new cable systems, unlike the phone companies, do not allow competitors to buy access to their high-speed path to the Internet.

"More than 5,000 ISPs have helped create a vibrant and innovative Internet because they have been allowed to offer competing service in dial-up Internet access See dial-up.  over phone lines," said Rich Bond, co-director of the openNET Coalition. "If AT&T wins this fight, ISPs will be locked out, and consumers will lose the Internet that they know and enjoy today."

Bond added that the members of openNET believe that competition is good for local economies and good for consumers who benefit from more choice, lower prices, and better service.

Local battles over open access have taken place this summer in Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and Broward County, Florida Broward County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 1,623,018; this makes it the second most populated county in the state. According to 2006 U.S. Census estimates, its population had grown to 1,787,636 [1]. . In the coming months, the issue will be debated in a new group of cities that are considering whether to permit AT&T to acquire the monopoly cable franchises held by Media One. Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Richmond, Dayton and parts of Florida are among the local communities that will be considering whether AT&T should be granted a monopoly.
