REI's STAAD.Pro engineering software assists IIT researchers in

better understanding the effects of major earthquakes on man-made

structures

Research Engineers International (REI), a division of netGuru, Inc. (Nasdaq:NGRU), providers of world class engineering software for structural design and analysis, along with IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) announce the results of a benchmark study on the effects of earthquakes on multi-story buildings.

IIT, which ranks among the leagues of the world's leading universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and California Institute of Technology in the United States, has been involved in an on-going earthquake research via its Department of Earthquake Engineering.

Real world seismic data was captured on Jan. 26, 2001, during a devastating earthquake in Gujarat, India, that measured 6.9 on the Richter scale. Using both STAAD.Pro and existing structural drawings, researchers modeled several concrete and steel buildings. Data gathered from sensors strategically placed on various points on the buildings during the actual earthquake were input into STAAD.Pro to simulate the effects of the earthquake.

The study concluded that the STAAD.Pro analysis was highly accurate as it correlated with the actual results gathered from the buildings during the earthquake. IIT researchers used data from STAAD.Pro's structural analysis as a benchmark and a basis for comparison.
