Resonance and Mitsubishi Research Institute, announced on October 19 the results of its recent survey on attitudes toward breast cancer. The survey, which was conducted between September 20 and 26, received valid response from 21,106 women.

Of the respondents, more than 80% answered that they have an interest in breast cancer. In particular, women in their late 50s are more interested in the cancer than other age groups. As for information sources, 53% of the respondents mentioned TV and radio, followed by the Internet (45.2%).

Although more than 50% know of basic information on breast cancer, less than 20% of them relate the disease to them in spite of the facts that the leading cause of death in women aged from 30 to 64 is breast cancer and that more than 1 in 30 women may develop it.

Further, 48.3% of the respondents said that they have a medical checkup check·up

Mammography is still the modality of choice for screening of early breast cancer, since it is relatively fast, reasonably accurate, and
. The early diagnosis of breast cancer made possible by the routine use of mammography for screening women increases a woman's treatment alternatives and improves her  screenings.

When asked about the reason why they took the cancer screening, 35.5% of the respondents answered that they felt a need to do so, and others said that the screening was included in a checkup offered by municipalities (34.2%) and by companies (25.2%).

Regarding the reason why those who have never taken the screening, 62.6% said that they have not found any abnormality in their physical conditions while 43.9% mentioned that they lacked the opportunity to take one. Further, 43.7% of the respondents said that they are not sure whether or not their local municipalities offer a breast cancer screening test to residents.
