Aladdin Knowledge Systems (Nasdaq/NMS:ALDN), a global leader in the field of Internet content and software security, announced CSRT is alerting customers of a new, destructive macro virus named SUPPL (W97M.Suppl Virus) that affects email users worldwide.

CSRT (Content Security Response Team) is designed to proactively detect and monitor any threatening content coming through the Internet, helping corporate end-users and Systems administrators to keep their networks on-line and secure.

In their findings, the CSRT team determined the eSafe Protect Gateway product is the only proactive solution available that protects against such threats without the need to install new updates or upgrades. The new SUPPL virus infects the global template (usually normal.dot) of MS-WORD97 and travels through emails and newsgroups as an attachment with the name: SUPPL.DOC. Once the attachment is opened and the Macro executed, the virus will infect every document opened or created on the infected system. The virus body also contains a vandal executable within the Macro that replaces the WSOCK32.DLL. Once replaced, it will attach the infected SUPPL. DOC file to every email message sent using SMTP (email protocol). After 163 hours from the initial infection, the virus will delete the content of files with the following extensions on the local hard disk: .doc, .xls, .txt, .rtf, .dbf, .zip, .arj, and .rar.
