eMagin Awarded $1 Million to Continue Military Avionics Display Development.

eMagin Corporation (AMEX: EMA), a leading developer of microdisplays and virtual imaging technology, announced that it will receive additional funding of its Phase III Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the US Air Force.

The $1 million contract will be used to further advance and integrate high-resolution active matrix organic light emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays for a variety of military avionics applications.

As part of the program, eMagin will increase the luminance of ultra high-brightness displays for sunlight-readable see-through head wearable applications. The program targets energy efficient brightness levels over 30,000 candelas per square meter (cd/m2), more than two hundred times brighter than typical notebook computer displays that typically run at under 100 cd/m2. See-through capability allows superimposing of data and information over real world images, enhancing navigation, targeting, and situational awareness for the pilot, even in bright sunlight.

eMagin's OLED microdisplay technology is also planned to be incorporated into the Strike Helmet 21 system that uses the Integrated Panoramic Night Vision Goggles (IPNVG), targeted for integration into F-15E aircraft by the 2003-2004 time period. Additionally, the program supports the Air Force's objectives for development of a non-see-through display that is a clip-on module for flight helmets, with the potential for wide military use in ejection seat and non-ejection seat aircraft.

The SBIR Phase III contract will continue to be managed by Dean Kocian of the Air Force Research Laboratory's Human Effectiveness Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH.

The OLED microdisplay's wide-angle light output, low power consumption, and ease of optics integration in a compact package make incorporation into helmets an ideal application for the technology. Prior phases of the Air Force SBIR Program resulted in development of eMagin's SXGA (1280 x 1024, or 1. 3 million pixels) matrix OLED microdisplay, running video with 256 gray shades at less than 400 mW, with a brightness of 200 cd/m2.
