HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr. 10, 2002

eMagin Corporation (AMEX AMEX

It provided the operating environment for managing a multi-vendor network. ), a leading developer of microdisplays and virtual imaging technology, announced that it will receive additional funding of its Phase III Noun 1. phase III - a large clinical trial of a treatment or drug that in phase I and phase II has been shown to be efficacious with tolerable side effects; after successful conclusion of these clinical trials it will receive formal approval from the FDA  Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR SBIR Small Business Innovation Research (program/grant)

) contract from the US Air Force.

The $1 million contract will be used to further advance and integrate high-resolution active matrix organic light emitting diode See LED.  (OLED (Organic Light Emitting Device, Organic Light Emitting Diode) A thin film light-emitting technology that is expected to compete with LCD and plasma TVs as well as LCD monitors and readouts. ) microdisplays for a variety of military avionics applications.

As part of the program, eMagin will increase the luminance The amount of brightness, measured in lumens, that is given off by a pixel or area on a screen. For example, dark red and bright red would have the same chrominance, but a different luminance.  of ultra high-brightness displays for sunlight-readable see-through head wearable applications. The program targets energy efficient brightness levels over 30,000 candelas per square meter Noun 1. square meter - a centare is 1/100th of an are

(cd/m2), more than two hundred times brighter than typical notebook computer displays that typically run at under 100 cd/m2. See-through capability allows superimposing of data and information over real world images, enhancing navigation, targeting, and situational awareness for the pilot, even in bright sunlight.

eMagin's OLED microdisplay technology is also planned to be incorporated into the Strike Helmet 21 system that uses the Integrated Panoramic Night Vision Goggles goggles,

(IPNVG IPNVG Integrated Panoramic Night Vision Goggles ), targeted for integration into F-15E aircraft by the 2003-2004 time period. Additionally, the program supports the Air Force's objectives for development of a non-see-through display that is a clip-on module for flight helmets, with the potential for wide military use in ejection seat and non-ejection seat aircraft.

"eMagin's ongoing collaboration with the Air Force underscores the company's commitment to provide leading edge imaging technology to our warfighters," said Susan Jones, eMagin's executive vice president. "Built into helmets, power efficient OLED technology will allow hands-free operation and increase situational awareness with enough brightness to be used both in bright daylight and night vision applications. We are proud that the U.S. Air Force continues to show strong support for our enabling OLED technology."

The SBIR Phase III contract will continue to be managed by Dean Kocian of the Air Force Research Laboratory's Human Effectiveness Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 8,023 acres (3,247 hectares), W Ohio, NE of Dayton; est. 1917. One of the largest airport installations in the world, it is the air force's main research and development base, and the headquarters of the , Dayton, OH.

The OLED microdisplay's wide-angle light output, low power consumption, and ease of optics integration in a compact package make incorporation into helmets an ideal application for the technology. Prior phases of the Air Force SBIR Program resulted in development of eMagin's SXGA (Super XGA) A screen resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. SXGA is commonly used on standard monitors, but provides a 1.25:1 aspect ratio, compared to the more common 1.33:1 (4:3) ratio. SXGA+ has a 1400x1050 resolution, which is an exact 1.33:1 ratio.  systems, games and other entertainment. The company's products have applications in a broad range of military, industrial, and consumer information products. eMagin's OLED microdisplays demonstrate performance characteristics which are important to military and other demanding commercial and industrial applications including high brightness and resolution, wide dimming range, wider temperature operating ranges, shock and vibration resistance, and insensitivity to high G-forces. The OLED's wide temperature range is especially of interest for military applications because the display can turn on instantly at temperatures far below freezing and can operate at very high temperatures. eMagin's corporate headquarters and microdisplay operations are co-located with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  on its Hudson Valley campus in East Fishkill, N.Y. Wearable and mobile computer headset/viewer system design and full-custom microdisplay system facilities are located at its wholly owned subsidiary Wholly Owned Subsidiary
