culture: Albums of the month.

Byline: LUKE EDWARDS Lucas Daniel Edwards (b. March 24, 1980 in Nevada City, California) is an actor who is well-known for his roles in Little Big League, The Wizard, Newsies, and Jeepers Creepers 2.

Roisin Murphy/Overpowered

She was refreshingly different as the lead singer of Moloko and her maverick star still shines brightly.

It is not just dance-pop, it is the glitz glitz   Informal

Ostentatious showiness; flashiness: "a garish barrage of show-biz glitz" Peter G. Davis.

and the glam from a good night out and it is one of the albums of the year. Journal Rating *****

is in sparkling form on his second solo album and anyone who retains a fondness for 80s glamrock, or anyone wishing to discover where the nu-rave scene has its roots, this 40-something has plenty of gas left in the tank.

Talib Kweli/Eardrum

Considerably less hype than either Kanye West or 50 Cent's head-to-head releases last month, but Talib is an inspiration to Kanye and a much better lyricist lyr·i·cist

than his close friend. He is finally starting to get the mainstream exposure his intelligent and thought-provoking work deserves.

Not as musically appealing as Graduation, but a better pure Hip-Hop record.

Journal Rating ****

Kano/London Town

British Hip-Hop has finally achieved respectability, but albums like these are in danger of undoing all that. Kano has been heavily pushed by a record label looking for an urban-mainstream crossover success such as Craig David or The Streets. Kano is signed to The Streets' label and Craig David is on hand to add some production, but this is a poor imitation of their work A major disappointment.

Journal Rating **

Jools Holland/Best of Friends

As the title would imply, these are a few of Jools' old friends with contributions from Lulu, Chrissie Hynde, Jos Strummer, Shane MacGowan and Tom Jones. I hate to say it, but if you have relatives of a mature age, this might just be the perfect stocking filler.

Journal Rating ***

New Model Army/High

They are no longer the post-punk rockers with a social conscience as such, but they remain an enduring soft rock act with, well, something to say. It won't open new doors for them, but it won't get any slammed in their faces.

Journal Rating ***

KT Tunstall/Drastic Fantastic

The powerful folk voice remains, but there is a more pop feel to her second album. The purists and most ardent fans will perhaps moan about the shift in approach, but it is ultimately another impressive album.

Journal Rating ***

Ministry of Sound/The Annual 2008

As ever, a thorough collection of all the biggest dance tunes of the year. If you danced to it in Ibiza, or threw some shapes in a dodgy dodgy - Synonym with flaky. Preferred outside the US  disco in Magaluf, it's probably here.
