COLUMBIA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 28, 1996--biosys, Inc. (Nasdaq NM: BIOS) today announced that its wholly-owned British subsidiary, biosys-AgriSense, has received an initial order from the Egyptian government for the supply of Selibate(R) PBW, a pheromone pheromone

product based on the active ingredient gossyplure, for control of the pink bollworm pink bollworm, destructive larva of a moth, Pectinophora gossypiella. Probably of Native American origin, it is a serious pest of cotton in the S United States, chiefly along the Mexican border. . The total current tender is for 360,000 acres of cotton, 72% of which will be treated by biosys-AgriSense supplied product and raw materials, to a value of approximately $4.4 million. With a successful record in pink bollworm control, this is the third year that biosys-AgriSense has participated in the Egyptian program.

Selibate(R) PBW controls the pink bollworm by disrupting its ability to mate. Normally the female bollworm bollworm, name for the larvae of two different moths. The pink bollworm is a serious pest of cotton, and the corn earworm, or cotton bollworm, attacks cotton, corn, and other crops.  moth releases a sex pheromone to attract the male moth for mating. Selibate(R) PBW inundates the entire crop with the artificial equivalent of this same pheromone using proprietary slow release technology. This season-long treatment makes it difficult for the males to locate the females, thereby significantly reducing the pest population. On a world-wide basis, the pink bollworm causes over $250 million in damage to cotton crops annually.
