Zzyzx Delivers True Enterprise Tape Backup Solutions by Integrating New AIT-2 Drives With Qualstar Libraries.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 7, 1999--

Company Among First to Offer New Systems With Up To 10 Times Speed and

Capacity of Older Technology

Zzyzx Peripherals Inc., a leading manufacturer of platform independent, high-availability RAID storage systems and the country's leading reseller An organization that sells hardware and software to the general public. Resellers purchase products from software publishers and hardware manufacturers.  of Sun(TM) compatible Tatung(TM) desktop and rack mount UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
(TM) workstations, today announced the availability of new leading edge tape back-up solutions featuring Sony's AIT-2 tape drive technology and Qualstar's 412360 and 412180 AIT Tape Libraries -- offering unparalleled performance, capacity and value for unattended tape back-up solutions.

AIT-2 tape drives offer higher capacity (50GB native capacity/130GB compressed) and speed (6MB/sec native/15 MB/sec compressed) than any other tape drive on the market. These units are available as internal units, external subsystems and installed into Zzyzx' AIT Tape Libraries.

The two new members of Qualstar's highly successful TLS-4000 family of tape libraries, the 412360 and 412180, house up to 12 tape drives and 360 data cartridges (1) A cartridge used to hold computer data. See cartridge.

. Integrated with the AIT-2 tape drives, these systems offer up to 46TB of total capacity and throughput exceeding 670 GB/hr. The powerful combination of the AIT-2 tape drives with Qualstar's tape libraries, are integrated with back-up software from Zzyzx' industry partners Computer Associates, Legato (Legato Systems, Inc., Mountain View, CA, www.legato.com) A leading provider of storage management and high-availability software founded in 1988 and acquired by EMC Corporation in 2003. Legato software, including Celestra data management (data mining, data migration, etc.  and Veritas. This allows Zzyzx to offer true enterprise class, custom tape back-up solutions to its customers and extends Zzyzx' already comprehensive line of total hardware/software tape solutions for UNIX and NT environments.

"This new combination of AIT-2 tape drives and Qualstar's 412180 and 412360 Tape Libraries allows Zzyzx to offer our customers bigger, faster, stronger tape back-up solutions that feature five times the capacity (up to 46 TB), and twice the throughput (670GB/hr) than our previous best tape library," said Gino Fontana, product manager at Zzyzx.

The Total Solution

To provide total solutions, Zzyzx offers full consultation and analysis of customer needs to determine the proper mix of products customized to their individual requirements. Appropriate software packages are then folded in that will run best with the user's computing computing - computer  applications, along with complete installation and training. Zzyzx' back-up software partners include Computer Associates, Legato and Veritas.

In addition to these software packages, more than 20 other leading back-up and storage management application developers are supported by Zzyzx' tape libraries.

"It becomes much more than simply reselling a tape library because we help customers decide what's best for them, implement it for them and then after the sale support them on it down the road when it comes time to fine tuning Fine Tuning is the name of XM Satellite Radio's eclectic music channel. AIT-2 Technology

AIT-2 provides a new standard for tape storage solutions, offering outstanding capacity, performance and reliability in a compact 3.5-inch form factor.

AIT-2 is a second-generation tape drive technology from Sony. It offers higher capacity and performance over the previous generation AIT-1, and provides improved data access and data management through the use of an enhanced Memory-In-Cassette (MIC) feature.

AIT-2 offers customers the option of two cartridge capacities. The 50 GB native capacity cartridge (130GB with compression) in a single cartridge and a 36GB cartridge (93GB compressed) featuring the performance advantages of AIT-2, plus quicker average access time to data at a lower price point. Both can be read by AIT-2 drives at a 6 MB/sec sustained transfer rate (12MB/sec with compression).

The MIC feature, which consists of a chip containing the tape's system log, search map and other user-definable information, allows the drive to advance at high speed directly to any file on the tape. The result is much faster access time to data, fewer than 30 seconds, compared to an average of more than 70 seconds for conventional, competing technologies.

AIT-2 drives are fully read and write backward compatible Refers to hardware or software that is compatible with earlier versions of the product. Also called "downward compatible." Contrast with forward compatible.

The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  7000 tape drive technology in both capacity and speed, setting a new standard in tape drive technology.

Qualstar Tape AIT Tape Libraries

With the introduction of the 412360 and 412180, Qualstar now offers the broadest range of tape library solutions available with the widest range of capacity and performance choices to meet any tape storage need -- whether backing up a single server or as an integral part of an enterprise-wide network back-up solution.

Ten models are available, supporting from one to 12 tape drives (either AIT1 or AIT2) and 12 to 360 data cartridges. This range of products offers tape libraries that provide throughput exceeding 670 GB an hour. The result is unsurpassed performance to meet tight back-up windows, and tape capacities from 300 GB to over 46 TB in a desk-side footprint.

, key locked access door and comprehensive menu system for configuration, operation and diagnostics. In addition to this wide range of solutions, Qualstar manufactures the most reliable tape libraries in the industry today that utilize brushless motors, high precision lead screw-driven robotics robotics, science and technology of general purpose, programmable machine systems. Contrary to the popular fiction image of robots as ambulatory machines of human appearance capable of performing almost any task, most robotic systems are anchored to fixed positions , digital closed loop motion control, optical position sensors A position sensor is any device that enables position measurement. It can either be an absolute position sensor or a relative one(displacement sensor). Position sensors can be either linear or angular.  and filtered positive air pressure.

Pricing, Availability, Warranty & Support

The new storage systems are currently available through Zzyzx. Pricing for all customized packages ranges from low to high-end. They are backed by an aggressive three-year warranty with 48-hour express replacement, cross-ship warranty in the first year, as well as options for on-site service and extended warranties The examples and perspective in this article or section may not represent a worldwide view of the subject.
